  2. The Mission

  3. Breaking the Sound Barrier The “sound barrier” is a figure of speech for traveling at speeds at or greater than the speed of sound. Click here for more. The Physicsof the Sound Barrier The speed of sound (at 20˚C and 1-atm) is 343m/s or 768mph. In order to break the sound barrier, you would have to travel at the speed of sound (this is called Mach 1).

  4. As the balloon ascends the temperature decreases with height up to the troposphere. In the stratosphere the temperature will actually begin to rise with an increase in height (caused by ozone molecules absorbing UV radiation from the sun). The Physicsof the Stratosphere

  5. The Ascentattached to a big balloon. Once Launched, Felix will float to 120,000ft in just under 3 hours. The 30-million-cubic foot helium balloon is 1/10 the thickness of a Ziplock bag, yet weighs more than 3,000 pounds. Stretched out it would cover 40 acres.

  7. Felix Baumgardner set the following records during his jump: - highest jump (128,100 feet) - longest free fall (4 minutes and 20 s) - maximum vertical velocity (833.9 mph = Mach 1.24) - the most (simultaneously) streamed video ever! The World Record Jump A Felix fell, the air molecules exert a drag force on his body acting as a gradual brake.
