AssessmentWhen assessing vocabulary knowledge, you should observe whether students can do the following: • Use surrounding information in a sentence to predict the meaning of an unknown word. • Use word origins or parts of words. • Provide a possible definition of a word. • Use other sources to determine meaning

  12. Students need many opportunities for developing a rich vocabulary through listening, reading, and writing. Vocabulary knowledge influences both comprehension and fluency. (Flood, Jensen, Lapp, & Squire, 1991; Robb, 1997)
