In this lesson, we explore the concept of decomposition reactions, exemplified by the reaction of magnesium oxide (MgO) breaking down into magnesium (Mg) and oxygen (O). Students will learn to differentiate between endothermic and exothermic reactions. Additionally, we will discuss silver (Ag), noting its properties as the most reflective metal and the best electrical conductor, while addressing the issue of tarnishing when it reacts with oxygen. We will also mention that silver is cost-effective compared to gold and its historical use in coins.

Warm up 01-02-14 • Question: What type of reaction? MgO Mg + O • Answer: • Decomposition. • Goal: I will learn about endo and exothermic reactions.
ELEMENT OF THE DAY • 47 – Silver – Ag • Silver is the most reflective metal, and the best electrical conductor. • The main problem with silver is that it tarnishes (reacts with oxygen). • Silver is much cheaper than gold, so it can be used in coins (and has been for about 3,000 years), but is still too expensive to commonly be used for electrical applications, so copper is usually used, which is only about 10% less conductive.
