  1. MICE RF Amplifier Status Andrew Moss ASTeC Collaboration meeting, RAL, 10th – 13th november 2009

  2. Outline • Testing of medium power amplifier • Rebuild of large amplifier • Testing of large amplifier • MICE hall design/implementation • Conclusion Collaboration meeting, RAL, 7th – 10th October 2007

  3. The Task for Daresbury RF group Master Oscillator Controls etc DL Test System CERN HT Supplies 300 kW Amplifier 300 kW Amplifier 300 kW Amplifier 300 kW Amplifier 2 MW Amplifier 2 MW Amplifier 2 MW Amplifier 2 MW Amplifier HT Supplies LBNL Daresbury 201 MHz Cavity Module 201 MHz Cavity Module Collaboration meeting, RAL, 7th – 10th October 2007 Collaboration meeting, RAL, 7th – 10th October 2007 Andrew Moss

  4. Daresbury Test system Collaboration meeting, RAL, 7th – 10th October 2007

  5. 4616 Amplifier Testing Retesting of medium power amplifier system before connection to high power system New PLC control system looks after all power supplies interlocks and local safety – equipment doors etc Old Berkeley 4616 tube still installed and produced – 100kW power quite easily – more possible with time, will test again next week CERN test load will then be disconnected and system connected to power large amplifier Collaboration meeting, RAL, 7th – 10th October 2007

  6. Amplifier rebuild Original 116 amp Refurbished 116 amp Collaboration meeting, RAL, 7th – 10th October 2007

  7. Electrical controls • Base of amplifier includes air blowers, cathode switcher, filament PSU and control electronics • Electrical systems being tested now • RF input ready to be connected up to 4616 amp Collaboration meeting, RAL, 7th – 10th October 2007

  8. Base of amplifier Collaboration meeting, RAL, 7th – 10th October 2007

  9. RF test load • 1 megawatt test load installed on stand and piped up to glycol cooling • 200kw load being used for 4616 test, needs to be removed before connection can be made • Can be moved to RAL for tests in hall Collaboration meeting, RAL, 7th – 10th October 2007

  10. 116 amplifier output Problem found with using original HT connection, quick solution was to use part of one of the CERN amplifiers CERN/Berkeley amps are directly compatible in this area Water supplies connect through 40kV HT connection to amplifier valve for cooling -complex arrangement, we can copy it from CERN drawings Water input and return Output match tuning stub Coax 9 inch to 6 inch transition and output Collaboration meeting, RAL, 7th – 10th October 2007

  11. Amplifier tuning Tuneable coax sections old Remote control section new Collaboration meeting, RAL, 7th – 10th October 2007

  12. RF Testing • Retest of 4616 has been done this week • Electrical checks of 116 auxiliary electrical systems underway • CERN HT connection used • Next week connect up drive coax between 4616 and 116 (with loaned flexible section from RAL linac group) • Should have results of testing with RF in December for entire system into load Collaboration meeting, RAL, 7th – 10th October 2007

  13. Hall design • 6 inch distribution coax will be used from amplifiers • Large phase shifters will be needed 3-4 meter devices • hybrid power splitter with a 1MW reject load for each cavity • Phase shifters needed to used to correct for phase error at cavity coupler, possible to use limited range probe style phase shifters • Rotary joints before cavity inputs to allow disconnection of cavity/testing into load • Nitrogen pressure in coax to help prevent breakdown and provide interlock for coax guide complete Collaboration meeting, RAL, 7th – 10th October 2007

  14. Amplifier to cavity installation 1 Collaboration meeting, RAL, 7th – 10th October 2007

  15. Amplifier to cavity installation 2 Collaboration meeting, RAL, 7th – 10th October 2007

  16. Coax components • 4 1MW loads needed for each RFCC installation • 1 RF trombone for Berkeley amp ~ Big! • 2 RF trombones for CERN amp 3 meters long Collaboration meeting, RAL, 7th – 10th October 2007

  17. Hall implementation • RF coax has to be this big to stand off the voltages inside • Design of layout of coax and components will be started very soon • Need to develop CAD models to see how it will all fit under the floor • Search to find smaller devices, need to liaise with manufactures and perhaps test at DL to check operation Collaboration meeting, RAL, 7th – 10th October 2007

  18. Plan • Test 116 amplifier • Design hall coax in detail and work out how to fit it all in space for steps 5 and 6 • Assemble CERN amplifier and test with current power supplies • Autumn 2010 move first amplifier system to MICE hall and install Collaboration meeting, RAL, 7th – 10th October 2007

  19. CERN amplifier awaiting assembly Collaboration meeting, RAL, 7th – 10th October 2007

  20. Conclusion • Large amplifier ready and will re-commission to 1MW using old tubes • Will run for as long as possible to develop understanding and look for weak points • CERN amplifiers on site awaiting build • Hall layout needs careful work • search for smaller key coax component’s if possible • Two new TH116 tubes have been delivered to DL, two more due soon Collaboration meeting, RAL, 7th – 10th October 2007
