  3. “Rikki-tikki-tavi” Notes • For example, Tamara pushed open the rusty gate. The garden was as overgrown as a jungle. “There could be very strange creatures hiding in this place,” she thought. As a story progresses, the tension in the story rises as the climax approaches. The excitement as you read is called suspense.

Writers build suspense by using foreshadowing. Foreshadowing are hints or clues about events that will happen later as the plot develops.

What does the setting tell me? What do you think the characters will do in the future? • For example, if a story introduces a mongoose and a snake and you know that mongooses and snakes are natural enemies, you can predict that there will be a conflict between the two during the story.
