  4. 1st Stop Before Reading Island Arr Mates before we pillage the text, lets set a purpose for reading. We are going to scupper that by: 1. Preview text to see what type of passage it is. 2. Look at the question to analyze where we can find the answer. 3. Underline the key word in the question to determine what reading standard is targeted.

  6. Captain Queen (teacher) Modeling Watch as I demonstrate how to do the BEFORE reading strategies. Ye better pay attention ye scurvy dogs or you will walk the plank!

  7. What Before Reading Strategies did I use? Sail ho! Raise your hand to volunteer an answer on the microphone or you can type it in the chat pod

  8. What Before Reading Strategies did ye Captain use? • Read the title and subheadings. Ask yourself- What do I think this is going to be about? • Look at map, charts and pictures. Why did the author put these in the passage? • Look at the passage as a whole? What kind of genre is this passage? Is it a fictional story, informational, persuasive?

  9. Come about. It’s time for Pirate Practice Now its ye turn to practice the previewing strategy. Turn to page 7 and preview the next passage.

  10. Aho mates- Use these Before Strategies while you smartly preview • Read the title and subheadings. Ask yourself- What do I think this is going to be about • Look at map, charts and pictures. Why did the author put these in the passage? • Look at the passage as a whole? What kind of genre is this passage? Is it a fictional story, informational, persuasive?

  13. QARQuestion/ Answer Relationship By knowing what kind of questions you have at your heel the easier it will be for ye to seek ye comprehension treasure

  15. Right There Questions The words used to make up the question and words used to answer the question are "right there" (usually in the same sentence of the text).

  16. Think and Search The answer is in the text, but you must put together different pieces of information to find it.

  18. Author and Me The answer is not in the text. You need to use your Background Knowledge, what the author tells you, and how it fits together.
