Germanic Invaders of the British Isle Celts • Lived in Southeastern Britain • Invaded by Angles and Saxons • Fled North and West to the mountains. • Settled in Ireland, Scotland and Wales. • Scottish, Welch, and Irish people today are descendants. Anglo-Saxons • A.D. 400 Romans leave England • Anglos came from Demark • Saxons come from Germany • Both invade unprotected Germany and drive Celts out.

Germanic Invaders of the British Isle Visogoths – Ostrogoths • Visigoths are from Spain • Ostrogoths in Italy • Both are close to the center of the old Roman Empire • Both adopt many Roman customs Franks • A.D. 400 German people called Franks settle in Gaul or France • King Clovis, 496 was a Christian King • Soon all France would be Christian • King Clovis’s sons and grandsons divide kingdoms • “Mayor of Palace” provides services for people while the kings fight • Charles Martel rises to power
