Makerere University in Kampala • the first major institution of higher learning in East and Central Africa. • Uganda’s largest university. • began as a technical school in 1922 • in 1963 it became the University of East Africa, offering courses leading to general degrees of the University of London. • It became an independent national university in 1970 when the University of East Africa was split into three independent universities: University of Nairobi (Kenya), University of Dar-es-Salam (Tanzania) and Makerere University. • Today, Makerere University has 22 faculties, institutes and schools offering programs for about 30,000 undergraduates and 3,000 postgraduates..

Mbarara University of Science & Technology • The University is made up of three Faculties and Two Institutes; Faculties: • Faculty of Development Studies • Dept. of Development studies • Dept of Management Science • Faculty of Medicine. Institutes: • Institute of Computer Science • Institute of Tropical Forest Conservation

Mbarara University • Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) was founded in 1989 when the National Resistance Council passed a Statute establishing the University. • The University started as the second public university in Uganda after Makerere University. • MUST took over and extensively modified the physical facilities of the former School of Midwifery and turned them into structures for the university. • New structures have since been added. The University now has three faculties and two institutes.

Mbarara University • Undergraduate programs started in October 1989 for students taking courses leading to the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery • Subsequently, two more Faculties were added: • 1. Faculty of Science with Education2. Faculty of Development Studies • It is planned to start a Faculty of Applied Science and Technology in the near future. • In addition to the above Faculties, the University in 1991 established an Institute of Tropical Forest Conservation based in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park for the purpose of education and research in Tropical Forest Biology and Conservation. • Then later in 2006 the Institute of Computer Science started with two under-graduate programs.

Gulu University • Gulu University is located in Gulu municipality about 4km northeast of Gulu town. • It is housed in the premises of the former Gulu District Farm Institute although more structures have been put up. • It has 742 hectares of land plus additional land to serve as a university farm under the yet-to-openFaculty of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.

Gulu University • Legal statusThe University is a public higher institution established by Statutory Instrument No. 16 of 2003. • It is poised to make a significant contribution and sustainable development in NorthernUganda and serve as a launch pad for equitable development by stimulating innovations in education, technical and economic empowerment in the region & country
