  2. Common Sense, Thomas Paine, and Propaganda

  3. Propaganda: • Any information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movement, institution, nation, etc.. (dictionary.com)

  4. What examples of propaganda do you see around you today?

  5. It all started with “Common Sense,” the writing that sparked a revolution. • Best selling work by an American author up to that point. (only the Bible was read by more people) • George Washington ordered this pamphlet distributed to his troops.

  6. Paine’s Arguments Against British Rule • An Island cannot rule a continent • America was not simply “British,” it was composed of people from all over Europe • Britain would drag America into European wars • The distance between America and England made governing difficult • Britain ruled America for ITS benefit, not the benefit of the colonies.

Propaganda Activity • You will be creating a propaganda advertisement for or against the Revolution as a Loyalist or as a Patriot (as assigned) • You will need to argue for or against one of Thomas Paine’s reasons in “Common Sense.” To receive full credit Mrs. Camarillo must be able to tell which argument you are referring to. • You must use color, but your ad can include words and/or pictures. • Due TODAY at the end of the period.
