  1. Sensory Systems

  2. Exteroceptors • Exteroceptors are receptors that sense stimuli that arise in the external environment.

  3. Sensory Receptor Categories Mechanoreceptors are stimulated by mechanical forces , such as pressure. There are receptors for touch , hearing, and balance. Chemoreceptors detect chemicals changes. The senses of smell and taste rely on chemoreceptors. Electromagnetic Receptors react to heat and light energy. The photoreceptors of the eyes that detect light are an example, as are the thermal receptors found in some reptiles.

  4. Sensory 4-step Process

  5. Mechanoreceptors: Touch and Pressure • Receptors of the skin are called cutaneous receptors.

  6. Skin Receptors: • Nociceptors(Pain receptors)- Detects stimulus that causes or is about to cause tissue damage (pain). • Thermoreceptors: Receptors that are sensitive to changes in temperature.
