    4. TLWBAT SOLVE REAL WORLD WORD PROBLEMS TRANSFORMING FORMULAS OR USING THE SKILLS OF SOLVING LITERAL EQUATIONS.

    5. BLOOMS CREATING: Putting elements together to form a coherent or functional whole; reorganizing elements into a new pattern or structure through generating, planning, or producing.

    6. ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS WHAT IS A LITERAL EQUATION? HOW DO I KNOW WHICH VARIABLE I SHOULD BE SOLVING FOR?

    7. DEFINITION Equations and formulas that have several variables (letters) are called literal equations. Your job, usually, will be to solve the equation for one of the variables. In other words, move all the letters away from the one you are solving for. They go to the other side of the equal sign so that the one variable you are solving for stands alone.

    9. EXAMPLE

    10. LETS LOOK AT A LITERAL EQUATION Brandon knows that his truck route from Illinois to Tennessee is 430 miles long. He also knows that Distance = rate time (D = rt) How long will his route take if he averages a speed of 50 mi/hr? D = rt we need to solve for t because we are trying to find out how long it will take.

    11. EXAMPLE D = rt we need to solve for t, so what is the relationship here. r is married to t and they equal D. So, if you need to solve for t, is t married? If so, to who? t is married to r and they must divorce. What do we do when we divorce?

    12. CONTINUE D = rt so lets divorce. D = rt r r Now, D = t so we are ready to solve the r problem.

    13. Real life Brandon knows that his truck route from Illinois to Tennessee is 430 miles long. He also knows that Distance = rate time (D = rt) How long will his route take if he averages a speed of 50 mi/hr? We have D = t or t = D so, t = 430/50 or r r 8.6 hours

    14. ANOTHER EXAMPLE Shoe sizes and foot length are related by the formulaS = 3L - 22, where S represents the shoe size and L represents the length of the foot, in inches. Solve the formula for L. 3 is married to L and -22 is moving in. What must we do to solve for L? SOLVE BEFORE NEXT SLIDE

    15. 2:33

    16. THIS FORMULA IS FOR MENS SIZE SHOES CALCULATE YOUR FOOT LENGTH USING THE FORMULA AND A TAPE MEASURE OR RULER. THEN CHECK TO SEE IF YOUR FORMULA WORKED. WE CAN USE ONLY BOYS FEET IF THE GIRLS DONT KNOW WHAT SIZE THEY WOULD WEAR IN A MENS SIZE.

    17. PRACTICE PROBLEMS TEACHER INTERVENTION I = prt t m + n = rt r 2m 2n = q m x = pt x s - 4

    18. WORK WITH PARTNERS 1. Solve for p: 1/3p = n 2. Solve for y: xy - d = m 3. Solve for y: y/2 + c = d 4. Solve for w: V = l w h 5. Solve for w: P = 2l + 2w 6.Lightning quickly heats the air causing it to expand, which produces the sound of thunder. Sound travels approximately 1 mile in 5 seconds. Knowing D = rt, how far away is a thunderstorm when you notice a 3-second delay between the flash of lightning and the sound of thunder?
