Responsive Classroom • This approach to teaching and learning is to help classrooms become caring communities in which social and academic learning are fully integrated throughout the school day and in which students are nurtured to become strong and ethical thinkers. • The approach emphasizes social, emotional, and academic growth in a strong and safe school community. The goal is to enable optimal student learning.
Responsive Classroom cont’d The following are some of the underlying beliefs of this program: 1. The social curriculum is as important as the academic curriculum. 2. How children learn is as important as what they learn: Process and content go hand in hand. 3. The greatest cognitive growth occurs through social interaction. 4. To be successful academically and socially, children need a set of social skills: cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy, and self-control. 5. Knowing the children we teach-individually, culturally, and developmentally-is as important as knowing the content we teach.
Implementing the RC Approach and the First 6 Weeks of School 1. Morning Meeting (greeting, share, group activities, morning message) 2. Hopes and Dreams 3. Developing classroom rules and jobs 4. Interactive Modeling 5. Playing/Practicing Classroom Routines 6. Logical Consequences/Conflict Resolution 7. Role Playing

Everyday Mathematics • Hands-on activities involving counting, numeration, measurement, geometry, patterns, sorting, data collecting, and calculator use. • Classroom routines give children real-life opportunities • The playful mathematics activities are meaningful and help children build a solid understanding of mathematical skills and concepts. • Research has shown that children have more success with written and symbolic mathematics in later grades if they have a Kindergarten experience that builds a strong foundation based on experience and understanding.
