  1. EASy: An Environmental System for Mapping and Modeling Aquatic Systems System Science Applications, Inc. www.runeasy.com

  2. EASy provides… • Interfaces to data sources (including automated importing), sensors, and software components (custom statistics, models, GUIs) shown in previous slide • 4-dimensional (lat, long, depth, time) foundation for integrating and analyzing (e.g. built in contouring) • Variety of graphical presentations (e.g. vector, raster, contours, xy plots) • Export of spatially/temporally selected information • Graphical User Interface which can be operated in 3 modes • running simulations of time series or models • browsing data independently of time • saving output of analysis as binary files which can be replayed • NetViewer plug-in for serving EASy applications over the Internet

  3. EASy Software Architecture Models • 4 dimensional system for marine applications WGS-84/geodetic representation • Interfaces for models, spreadsheets, databases, and Internet • PC Desktop & Web-enabled GIS applications

  4. EASy Graphical Environment Species richness relative to bathymetry, water density differentials & bottom temperature (summer climatology) AVHRR SST imagery for the Gulf of Maine Time Series plots Contour plot Image Browse Toolbar False colour plot Bubble plots Depth profile plots Simulation control panel Transect vertical contour plots

  5. NetViewer in Browse Mode • Drill and slice 3-dimensional data • Thematic browsing

  6. NetViewer in Simulate Mode • Implemented ITIS taxon nomenclature and organization • Total stations, active stations, presence/absence, value blobs, pie blobs, raster mapping of gridded

  7. Integrating and communicating information of the environmental status of Santa Monica Bay Project: Santa Monica Bay Restoration Project Collaborators: State of California, SMBRP, EPA, NGOs, Industry Product: Provide integrated beach amenities and water quality information

  8. Modeling plume dispersion of storm water discharge from creeks in Santa Monica Bay Project: Storm water discharge plume modeling Collaborators: Wrigley Institute of Environmental Studies, USC Product: SAR and in-situ effluent discharge observations coupled with a plume dispersion model

  9. Ghost Net Project: satellite imagery-based detection of driftnet convergence areas Project: GhostNet Collaborators: NOAA-NESDIS, NMFS, UAF Product: Integrated drifter tracks, ERIM imagery of fishing fleet activity, and buoy sensor time series data for the Gulf of Alaska

  10. Modeling of sea-nettle distributions in the Chesapeake Bay Project: Sea-nettles biogeography Collaborators: NOAA-NESDIS, 2001 Product: Merging in situ observations, hydrographic model outputs, SST imagery & bio-physical algorithms to monitor & predict sea-nettle distributions

  11. Tagging the Great White Shark Project: Great White Shark biogeography Collaborators: Wildlife Conservation Society and the South African Department of Environmental Affairs & Tourism Product: Satellite-tagged data matched against a background of satellite data on sea temperature for accessing species distribution patterns
