Osmosis is the movement of WATER from an area of higher concentration to lower concentration Diffusion can be any particle, Osmosis is water specific How water moves into or out of the cell can change the mass.

Types of solutions • Draw a picture model of a cell in each of the three types of solutions. • Name the type of solution above the picture • The amount of solute inside and outside of the cell should be clear! (either dots or %) • Show the direction of the flow of osmosis • Say if the cell would gain mass, lose mass or stay the same.

  11. Types of solutions • Isotonic solution- Concentrations of solute are equal between the inside and outside environment. Water moves at equilibrium, so no overall change in mass of cell 25% Sugar 75% water 25% Sugar 75% water EVERYTHING IS EQUAL!

  12. Types of Solutions • Hypertonic solution- Greater concentration of solute in the solution than in the cell. OSMOSIS pulls water out of the cell making it lose mass 60% Sugar 40% Water 25% Sugar 75% Water CELL SHRIVELS UP !
