What Needs Does the IB Meet? • An educational environment for students seeking an academic challenge • An avenue that fosters active participation in the community • A structure that guides students through the requirements of academic standards • The need to reflect on how our actions, words, and thoughts impact the person we become

  8. How does a student earn the IB Diploma? • Follow the Burbank IB Prep program in 9th & 10th grade • Register for IB courses in the United Kingdom the 11th & 12th grade • Pass all IB assessments • Write an Extended Essay, and complete a CAS Plan addressing creativity, action, and service.

What are the IB requirements ? • English, Spanish, Social Studies, Science, Math, and Fine Arts - taken the junior and senior year • Complete the CORE: • Extended Essay – 4000 word research essay • Theory of Knowledge – “How do we know what we know?” • CAS - Creativity, Action, and Service - done during the junior and senior year

Can they earn the IB Diploma at another school? • The IBO has the following authorized schools • 2,481 DP schools worldwide in 140 countries • 810 DP schools in North America and the Caribbean • 53 DP schools in Texas • 1 school in San Antonio, Texas Data taken from IBO.org, accessed April 1, 2014.

  13. What if a student does not earn the IB Diploma? Does that mean s/he will not graduate? • IB students at Burbank will graduate with a Texas high school diploma following the Foundation Program with Endorsements

  14. How does HB 5 Impact IB? • Students completing the IB curriculum will follow the guidelines for the Multi-Disciplinary Studies Endorsement. • Students may be eligible for additional endorsements, including: • Arts and Humanities (Band, Drama, Spanish, Choir, Orchestra) • STEM(Math and Science) • Public Service (ROTC)

  15. How does HB 5 Impact IB? • Students completing the IB curriculum will be eligible for the “Distinguished” achievement diploma provided that they meet the state’s TSI compliance. • Pass STAAR at commended levels • Pass PSAT at commended levels • Pass SAT or ACT at commended levels • Basically, be prepared to enter University without the need for remediation. • Meet the CCRS! 
