  3. General information • There’s 9,000 different kinds of sponges. • There diverse because of there shape, size, color, and where they live (seafloor, coral, reefs, etc)

  4. Structures!! • Two layers of cells separated by jelly-like material • Outer layer protects interior and many pores • Inner layer lines central cavity • Produces a protein called spongin or mineral-based, needle-like structures for support

  5. Reproduction/digestion • asexual: budding • Sexual: male/female structures present in same individual • Ingests food particles, digest and transport the nutrients throughout the sponges

  6. Examples of different kinds of sponges!! • Encrusting sponges • Free-standing sponges • Tube Sponge • Vase Sponge • Yellow Sponge • Red Tree Sponge • Common Sea Squirt
