Evolution • Evolution is defined biologically as: descent with modification • AKA a genetic change in a population over time. • Important Concepts to understand: • Evolution as defined above does not happen in individuals- it happens to populations • Scientists have data to suggest that all life stems from one common ancestor, and through different mechanisms and pressures biodiversity and speciation for all living things came about • EVOLUTION IS THE UNIFYING CONCEPT OF BIOLOGY-Scientists state that EVERYTHING in biology we have studied and will study has its roots in, or can be explained by evolution

Species • The concept of what a species is and how a species should be defined in biology is still a concept of debate for evolutionary biologists. • Several different concepts about species exist in scientific discussion • The most accepted definition currently for a species comes from the biological species concept: it states that a SPECIES is a group of individuals that actually or potentially interbreed in nature.

Hardy Weinberg • Hardy Weinberg is an equation that shows whether or not evolution is happening in a population or not • (in reality Hardy Weinberg is ideal- evolution is always happening so Hardy Weinberg never or rarely holds true) • If Hardy Weinberg is true there is no mutation, no new alleles in the population (no gene flow) Mating must be random, no genetic drift, and no natural selection • EQUATION: p2 +2pq+q2 = 1 and p+q=1 • p2= Homozygous Dominatnt AA • 2pq= Heterozygous Aa • Q2= Homozygous recessive aa
