Primary Production and Its Role in Coastal Ecosystems
Primary production represents the creation of organic matter by plants using sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into sugar. In coastal oceans, primary producers like seaweeds, seagrasses, and phytoplankton are essential for ecosystem health. Photosynthesis, facilitated by pigments such as chlorophyll-a, relies on light, nutrients, and temperature, which vary across ocean regions. Nutrient sources, including weathering, rainfall, and anthropogenic activities, affect coastal productivity. However, excessive nutrient input can lead to harmful algal blooms through eutrophication, posing a significant environmental risk.
