  2. harbor • A naturally or artificially protected area where ships dock The Statue of Liberty stands on an island in New York Harbor.

  3. ferry • a boat that carries people and things across a river Each year, millions of visitors ride the ferry out to the island.

  4. monument • a permanent structure that gives tribute to someone or something Bartholdi had created many other statues and monuments, but this one was to be very special.

  5. remembrance • to remember a special event It was to be a present from the people of France to the people of America, as a remembrance of the old friendship between the two countries.

  6. symbol • something that stands for something else She would be a symbol of the freedom in the New World.

  7. f a scination • being intensely interested As the huge statue grew, all of Paris watched with great f a scination.

  8. v o y a g e • a journey to some distant place Then began the hard work of taking Liberty apart for the long voyage across the Atlantic Ocean.
