Kindergarten Teaching Standards • We teach kindergarten according to state and national Common Core standards for our grade level. • Common Core standards were implemented in Kyrene in kindergarten beginning last year. Common Core is currently adopted in 45 states and 3 territories to help ensure that all US students have the same opportunity for academic success and college readiness.

  3. Harcourt Reading Series • Proficient reading strategies • Phonics • Vocabulary • Grammar • Comprehension • High frequency words • Literary Elements • Literature Response

  4. What This Looks Like • Morning Message • Shared literature • Phonics, Phonemic Awareness, syllables, rhyming • Vocabulary • Reading – focus skill • Small group work-flexible grouping • Independent work

  5. DIBELS Next • District test used based out of Oregon • One indicator used to determine if a child is going to struggle with reading. • Done 3 times a year. • Letter Id 55 Per Minute • First sound fluency 30 Per Minute • Phoneme Segmentation 40 Per Minute • Nonsense Words 28 Per Minute

MathConcepts Covered • Number and Operations in Base 10: Work with numbers 11-19 to gain foundations in place value. • Measurement and Data: Describe and compare measurable attributes, classify objects and count the number of objects in categories. • Counting and Cardinality: Know number names and the count sequence, count to tell the number of objects, compares numbers. • Operations and Algebraic Thinking: Understand addition as putting together and adding to, understand subtraction as taking apart and taking from. • Geometry: Identify and describe shapes, analyze, compare and compose shapes. • Mathematical Practices:Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, explain mathematical thinking

  8. Writing and Handwriting • Writer’s Workshop – Teacher Lesson, writing time, share • Invented spelling – Spelling phonetically is OK! Please do not spell for your child. • D’Nealian – adopted handwriting curriculum • This is an example of D’Nealian handwriting. The theory behind this style is that it helps kids transition into cursive at the end of second grade.

Science, Social Studies and Health • Science – Five Senses, Earth’s Materials, Living and Non-Living Things, Magnets, Properties of Objects and Weather • Social Studies – Being a Good Citizen, My Country, Workers, Where We Live, Time Goes By, Stories of the Past • Health – Growing Inside and Out, Staying Healthy, Caring for Your Teeth, Food For Health, Being Active, Home and Travel Safety, Safety While Playing, Staying Well, Medicines Help-Drugs Hurt, All About Feelings, Family Life, A Healthy Community

Technology • Integrate technology in everyday teaching in all subject areas. • Each classroom contains 5 laptops, a mounted projector, a document camera, and a SMARTBoard. • Teachers attend trainings to further their knowledge and ideas forusing technology in our classrooms. • Goal – For your child’s learning to be enhanced by technology in order to prepare them effectively for our technologically advanced world. • Each child must memorize their 6 digit student number as well as their password to log on to the computer. This information will be sent home soon with your student for practice.

Skills to Work On at Home… • Tying shoes (taking on and off) • Zipping and buttoning clothes • Hygiene (washing hands and blowing nose) • Writing and spellingfirst and last name • Knowing address and phone number • Knowing parents’ names and teacher’s name • Kindergarten sight words • Invented spelling.

  12. Report Cards and Assessments • Students are continually monitored and assessed in writing, reading and math. • A report card will go home in January and May. • We will conference with parents after the first and third quarters.

  13. We Need Volunteers! • Please see your child’s teacher for volunteer opportunities in the classroom and at home.
