  6. The Battle of Britain • Hilter's plan was to invade Great Britain by knocking out the Royal Air Force and then landing 250,000 soldiers on England's shores. • German bombers targeted British airfields and aircraft factories. • September 7, 1940 they began focusing on cities - London.

  10. The Battle of Britain • Battle of Britain continued until May 10, 1941. • Allies learned a crucial lesson: Hitler's advances could be blocked.

  11. Germany turned against the Soviet Union which meant fighting on two fronts. Soviet Union joined the Allied Powers. Germany Attacks the Soviet Union June 1941

  12. Germans took over Leningrad and Moscow.

  13. Germans Move Deeper Into Soviet Territory By November 1941, the cold stopped the German offensive. In the summer of 1942, Germans begin moving deeper into Soviet territory. They hoped to take Stalingrad in the south. “Not a step backwards.” –Joseph Stalin

  14. Stalingrad • The Battle began in August 23, 1942. • Germans wanted to control the oil fields near the city. • By November 1942--Germans controlled 90% of the city of Stalingrad.

  16. Stalingrad • February 2, 1943--90,000 frostbitten and half-starved Germans surrendered to the Soviets. • The Battle of Stalingrad is a Turning Point in the East!!!

  17. Lend-Lease Act • U.S. was supposed to be isolated. • The Lend-Lease Act allowed America to sell, lend, or lease arms or other war supplies to any nation that was considered, “vital to the defense of the United States.”

  19. Japan Attacks the U.S. Why did Japan attack the US? • Wanted to create an empire in the Pacific • Wanted revenge after the US cut off oil supply following the attack on China

  21. “A Date Which Will Live in Infamy” 7:55 a.m. on Sunday, December 7, 1941, Japanese warplanes attacked the American military base at Pearl Harbor.

  22. The Aftermath of the Attack Deaths: Over 2,300 people died. Wounded: 1,178 were wounded. What was destroyed? Two U.S. Navy battleships, one minelayer, two destroyers, and 188 aircraft.

  24. Following Pearl Harbor … • December 8, 1941 the United States declared war on Japan. • Germany then declared war on the U.S.

  25. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese invaded the Philippines and Indonesia and planned to invade both Australia and Hawaii.
