Overview 1 of 5 • Este curso de aprendizaje global expondrá a los estudiantes a la química predominante dirigida en Puerto Rico a nivel universitario, así como en la industria. • This global learning course will expose students to the predominant chemistry conducted in Puerto Rico at the university level as well as in industry.

Overview 2 of 5 • The culture, history and lifestyle of the host country population will be experienced through travels across the entire country, visits to historical sites, museums, landmarks, old San Juan, restaurants, industry, universities, a rainforest, a bioluminescent bay, caves and the largest radio telescope in the world. • La cultura, historia y estilo de vida de la población del país de acogida se experimenta a través de viajes por todo el país, visitas a sitios históricos, museos, monumentos históricos, el viejo San Juan, restaurantes, industrias, universidades, una selva tropical, la bahía bioluminiscente, cuevas y el Radiotelescopio más grande del mundo.

Overview 3 of 5 • These other scientific locations of interest are to be visited to increase the exposure to the interdisciplinary nature of science in Puerto Rico. • Otros lugares de interés científico van a ser visitados para aumentar la exposición a la naturaleza interdisciplinaria de la ciencia en Puerto Rico.

Overview 4 of 5 • Half of the course grade will be based on learning the “Essentials of Pharmaceutical Chemistry” as described in a short textbook of the same title to be used for the study abroad course. • La mitad de las calificaciones del curso se basará en el aprendizaje de "Elementos Básicos de Química Farmacéutica" como se describe en un libro de texto corto del mismo título que se utilizará para el curso de estudios en el extranjero.

  8. May 16, 2011, 16 de mayo, 2011 • Llegada a Puerto Rico. Viaje en autobús con la cena en Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. Vistas de San Juan y otras ciudades y las condiciones de vida en el camino a Mayagüez serán observadas. • Arrival in Puerto Rico. Bus ride with dinner to Mayaguez, PR. Views of San Juan, and other cities and living conditions along the way to Mayaguez will be observed.

May 17th, 2011, 17 de mayo, 2011 • One 3-hour guest lecture by Dr. Romanac of the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez on Culture, History and Development of the Pharmaceutical Industry in Puerto Rico including Process Analytical Technologies. • Una conferencia de 3 horas por el invitado Dr. Romanac de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, Mayagüez sobre Cultura, Historia y desarrollo de la industria farmacéutica en Puerto Rico, incluyendo tecnologías de proceso analítico. • A description of the UPR Exchange Program given by Mrs. GildrethGonzález. • A description of the research opportunities and the MS program in Chemistry at UPR Mayaguez given by TBA. • Una descripción del Programa de Intercambio de la UPR de la Sra. González Gildreth.Una descripción de las oportunidades de investigación y el programa de Maestría en Química en la UPR Mayagüez dada por TBA.

Continued, Continuacion • A description of the science of bioluminescence in marine species given by TBA. • Tour of the Mayaguez Campus, Chemistry Labs and Marine Science Labs • Dinner with University Hosts and Students. • Travel to La Paguera (one hour) and ride a boat to see the Bioluminescence of marine animals. • Una descripción de la ciencia de la bioluminiscencia en las especies marinas dada por TBA. • Recorrido por el Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez, los laboratorios de Química y los Laboratorios de Ciencias Marinas. • Cena con los anfitriones y estudiantes universitarios. • Viajar a La Paguera (una hora) y montar en barco para ver la bioluminiscencia de animales marinos.

  11. May 18th, 2011, 18 de mayo, 2011 • Tours of Merck, Sharp and Dohme Laboratory and Production Plant in Arecibo to see the production of Nexium and the water treatment facilities. Arrival in San Juan. • Excursión al laboratorio de Merck, Sharp & Dohme y la planta en Arecibo para ver la producción de Nexium y las instalaciones de tratamiento de agua. Llegada a San Juan.

May 19th, 2011, 19 de mayo, 2011 • Morning – 3 hour lecture on Chemistry Review and Chapter 1 of textbook given by Dr. Koether • Afternoon – 3 hour lecture on Chapters 2 and 3 of the textbook given by Dr. Powers. • Por la mañana - 3 horas de conferencias sobre Química de Revisión y el capítulo 1ro del libro de texto a cargo de la Dra. Koether. • Por la tarde - 3 horas de conferencias en los capítulos 2 y 3 del libro de texto a cargo del Dra. Powers.

  13. May 20, 2011, 20 de mayo, 2011 • Viaje a las Cuevas Camuy (incluye video), cerca de Arecibo, almuerzo, visita al Observatorio de Arecibo (incluye video). • Travel to Camuy Caves (includes video) near Arecibo, lunch, visit Arecibo Observatory (includes video).

  14. May 21st, 2011, 21 de mayo, 2011 • Travel to Old San Juan for the day to see the wall, streets, and buildings of the old town. Walk to the fort: El Morro and take the free bus to the fort: San Cristobal and receive a professional guided tour at each fort. Enjoy lunch in Old San Juan. • Viaje al Viejo San Juan por el día para ver la muralla, calles y edificios del casco antiguo. Caminar a la fortaleza El Morro y tomar el autobús gratuito a la fortaleza San Cristóbal y hacer una visita guiada profesional en cada fortaleza. Disfrute de un almuerzo en el Viejo San Juan.

  15. May 22nd, 2011, 22 de mayo, 2011 • Viaje a la Destilería de Ron Bacardí por un tour de una hora. El almuerzo se puede adquirir en la destilería. Visite el Jardín Botánico con una excursión por los jardines como el Jardín de Plantas Medicinales y el museo de la farmacia. • Travel to the Barcardi Rum Distillery for the one hour tour. Lunch can be purchased at the Distillery. Travel to the Botanical Gardens for tour of the gardens including the Medicinal Plants Garden and museum of pharmacy.

May 23rd, 2011, 23 de mayo 2011 • Morning – 3 hour lecture on Chapters 4 and 5 of the textbook given by Dr. Powers. • Afternoon – 3 hour lecture on Chapters 6 and 7 of the textbook given by Dr. Koether • Por la mañana - 3 horas de conferencias sobre los capítulos 4 y 5 del libro de texto a cargo del Dra. May 24th, 2011, 24 de mayo, 2011 • Visita a la Planta Farmacéutica Eli Lilly para visitar el laboratorio y las instalaciones de producción de la fabricación de insulina a través de procesos biotecnológicos. • Visit Eli Lilly Pharmaceutical Plant to visit the laboratory and production facilities of the manufacturing of insulin via biotechnology processes.

  18. May 24th, 2011, 24 de mayo, 2011 • Visite la única selva en EE.UU., pare en el centro de visitantes, vea el video, visite la torre de observación, haga una caminata de 1 milla a una catarata mientras observa la flora en el camino. • Visit the only rainforest in USA, stop at the visitor’s center, watch the video, visit the observation tower, hike a 1 mile hike to a water fall observing the flora along the way.

May 25th, 2011, 25 de mayo, 2011 • Visit Castillo Serralles in Ponce, PR, see a video and learn about the history of sugar cane and rum making in the Carribean and, in particular, the history of the Serralles family. • Visita al Castillo Serrallés en Ponce, PR. Ver un video y conocer la historia de la producción de caña de azúcar y ron en el Caribe y, en particular, la historia de la familia Serrallés. Visit Hacienda Buena Vista, north of Ponce, PR to see the history of coffee plantations in PR. Visita a la Hacienda Buena Vista, al norte de Ponce, PR para ver la historia de las plantaciones de café en Puerto Rico.
