  1. Adaptations

  2. What are adaptations? • Adaptation = A structural or behavioral characteristic that helps an organism survive and reproduce in it’s changing environment. • Adaptations can be for food getting, protectionand movement.

  3. What are Adaptations? • An adaptation is a physical (meaning structural) or behavioral characteristic that has developed to allow an organism to better survive in its environment. • Adaptations are the result of evolution, and may occur when a gene mutates, or changes by accident. • A mutationcauses the organism to better survive and reproduce, and it passes on that trait to its offspring. It can take many generations to develop an adaptation.

  4. How are Evolution and Adaptation Connected? • Adaptation is the evolutionary process whereby a population becomes better suited to its habitat. This process takes place over many generations, and is one of the basic phenomena of biology. • The term adaptationmay also refer to a feature which is especially important for an organism's survival. For example, the adaptation of horses' teeth to the grinding of grass, or their ability to run fast and escape predators. Such adaptations are produced in a variable population by the better suited forms reproducing more successfully, that is, by natural selection. • Information Source = Wikipedia

  5. Practice Identifying Adaptations • Complete the chart as we explore each arctic animal. (Write a B next to each Behavioral Adaptation and an S next to each structural adaptation.).

  6. Practice Identifying Adaptations • Complete the chart as we explore each desert animal. • Description of Fennec Fox • Description of Road Runner

  7. Environment • Explain how the arctic and antarctic animals in chart 1 who are well adapted to the arctic and antarctic environment would struggle if placed in the desert environment? (choose 1 of the arctic animals to discuss). • Explain how the desert animals in chart 2 who are well adapted to the desert environment would struggle if placed in the arctic environment? (choose one of the desert animals to discuss).
