  6. What is an instruction text? • Instruction text is a piece of writing that tells you what to do and how to do it. For you to be able to do what is asked, you must follow the given instructions or you will not get the desired result. To be able to identify an instruction text, you must be very careful to note the features of this type of writing. These includes: a ‘how to’ title, things you need, steps (numbered or bullet point), method and diagram. Instruction text makes use of bossy words in telling you what to do.

  9. Independent activity L.O(1) • Read the instruction below and highlight all the instructional words you can find. • Draw around the plate on a piece of yellow card. • Cut out the circle. Fold it in half. • Cut along the fold. • Scrunch a black tissue paper for the head. • Glue the tissue paper into the cone. • Use sticky tape to attach the thread to the cone.

  11. CONT. • Instructions are written for different purposes. • We have instructions that tells direction or shows the map of an unfamiliar environment. This type tells us which way to go. E.g, way out!, exit, entrance, turn right, walk down, etc. • Some tells us how to make or do something. • Recipe instructions, this tells you what you need to do to prepare that your yummy pancakes or sandwiches.

  14. L.O (3) Activity • Read the instruction text below. When our dog Toby dug a hole in the mud, he got really dirty! Mum said we had to give him a bath and I could help her. First, we got out all the things we needed. Toby had to stay outside for this bit. Mum got his special shampoo while I fetched a clean, old towel from the airing cupboard. Then mum put my old baby bath on the clean kitchen floor and used a jug to half fill the bath with warm water.

  15. Text continue Next, it was time to put the dog in the bath. I had to lure him in with one of his favourite bone – shaped biscuits and hold on to his collar to stop him from jumping straight out again. Mum squeezed some dog shampoo on his fur and rubbed and scrubbed until all the mud was gone. After that, we took him outside to rinse him off with the hose while he shook himself and made us wet with the drops. Next I rubbed him all over with the towel. Finally, while mum emptied the bath and mopped the kitchen floor, I brushed Toby’s fur until he looked smart and glossy.

  20. Objectives • To know how to answer simple questions from a given text. (level 1) • To be able to use information from a given text to answer comprehension questions. (level 2a/b)

  21. Comprehension Text Answering comprehension questions can be fun if you take note of the information given in the text while reading. Therefore, for you to be able to do this easily on your own, you must learn to do the following: • Read in a quiet place • Avoid distractions • Concentrate on the story/text you are reading • Take note of the information you can find in the text/story.

  32. Time Connectives • What is time connective? Time connectives shows the order in which your points are arranged. It tells you what you did first, next, then and so on. Here is a list of some time connectives for you to look at:

  33. TIME CONNECTIVE: • Shows the order of your points. • first, then, after, later, secondly, thirdly, finally, to begin with, next, in sum, to conclude, in a nutshell

  34. They can be used as sign posts telling us what to do first and so on.

  36. L.O(2/3) Activity.Highlight/ annotate all the time words in this text with your crayon. • In the morning make your sandwich with your favourite filling. Then put it on a board and cut it into two or four pieces. Keep your fingers out of the way of the knife as you cut! Next put the sandwich in a plastic sandwich bag to stop it drying out. After that, get an apple or orange, or a pot of yoghurt, a bag of crisps or anything else you like to have for lunch. Remember, you will need a spoon for your yoghurt. Now get your drink out of the freezer and put it in the middle of your lunch box. Finally, pack all the other things neatly around the frozen drink and close the lunchbox carefully. After that, your are ready to set off for school.

Writing an Instructional Text.Checklist • Use a ‘How to’ heading • Use an introduction to hook the reader • Include a ‘You will need’ sub – heading • Use numbered instructions appropriately sequenced • Use imperative (bossy) verbs in present tense to begin each instructions • Show diagram of your completed instructions.

  39. Annotate the key features of an instruction text from the extract below. How to make a Pepperoni Pizza • Ingredients: • Pizza Base  Tomato sauce Grated cheese • Pepperoni • Instructions • 1. Wash your hands. • 2. Spread tomato sauce on pizza base with a spoon. • 3. Sprinkle cheese on top. • 4. Then put pepperoni on top. • 5. Put on tray and cook in the oven. Cook for 8 mins on 200˚C. • 6. Eat your pizza.

  40. Your writing tasks. • I’m sure you have been having fun learning all about instructional text. Now its time to write yours. Remember you have to plan first of what you will like to make, then make a list of the things you will need to do this. Write out all the bossy words you think will help you in writing an effective instruction as well as some describing words. Finally when you need an adult help, don’t forget to ask for it at home with making your thing.
