  2. Feudalism- political and military system based on the holding of land. • Control of land was the key to power.

  3. Feudal Pyramid

  4. Lord • Someone who gives land to a vassal • Lord’s Duties • Required to fight in the kings army when called. (40 days) • Peacetime held courts of justice and collect taxes • Grant of Money Given to king for marriage or ransom

  5. Vassal • Received land from lord in return for oath of protection • Investiture • Lord gives Vassal a token of the land he will control • Fief • Piece of land given to a Vassal by a Lord • Would then be divided down • Last division would be for Knights

  6. Conflict of interest • Knight’s Duties • Devoted their lives to war • Could claim several Fiefs but loyalty went up the pyramid • Knights fief’s were very small • So they would pledge allegiance to many lords • Sometimes the two lords would fight each other

  7. Feudalism • Peasant • Free to leave manor, did not have to work as much but had to pay rent • Bad life very poor, horseless, weaponless, and powerless

  8. Feudalism • Serf • Not free but not a slave Bound to the land • Could not be bought or sold • Could not legally leave land

  9. Serf’s Duties • 1. 2-3 days of work on Lord’s land • 2. Portion of Serf’s grain goes to Lord • 3. 1 pig out of 10 goes to Lord • 4. Pay tax on bread Serfs make

  10. Feudalism • Manor • Basic economic unit used by a Lord • 1/3 land used for growing, 1/3 pasture, 1/3 forest • Produced almost everything they needed • Manor House built on high ground with a wall or ditch, safety for Lord and Peasant
