  2. Objectives • Demonstrate, evaluate and analyze strategies to manage stress. (HE 900.10.05) • Assess situations that are perceived as personal stressors. (HE 900.10.05a) • Compare stressors across the lifespan. (HE 900.10.05b) • Formulate positive ways to manage stressful situations.(HE 900.10.05c) • Describe five different causes of stress. • Describe the body’s physical response to stress. • Differentiate between positive and negative stress. • Describe how stress can make you sick. • Describe how you can take care of yourself to avoid stress-related illnesses. • Describe two relaxation techniques.

  3. The purpose of this lesson is to learn about what causes stress and how stress affects one’s health. • We will discuss the difference between positive and negative stress and learn how to manage stress.

  4. Use your textbook pages 78-88 and define the terms listed on your worksheet:Keep your book when finished

What Causes Stress? • There are many different types of stressors • Environmental-things in your environment that cause you stress…pollution, poverty, crowding, noise, and natural disasters • Biological-these are conditions that make it difficult for your body to take part in daily activities…having an illness, a disability, or injury • Thinking Stressors-any type of mental challenge • Behavioral Stressors-unhealthy behavior, such as not getting enough sleep or exercise, can lead to stress • Life Change Stressors-any major life change (positive or negative)…death or marriage • Stress is the body’s and mind’s response to a demand. • Stress is caused by stressors. Stressors are any situation that puts a demand on the body or mind.

Dilated Pupils • Increase in perspiration • Faster heart rate and pulse • Rise in blood pressure • Faster respiration rate • Narrowing of arteries to internal organs and skin • Increased blood flow to muscles and brain • Increase in muscle tension • Release of blood sugar, fats and cholesterol Physical Effects

  10. Fight-Or-Flight Mechanism

Fight-or-Flight • A survival mechanism • Allows our body to quickly prepare to escape from an injury or to engage in physical battle • Often absurdly inappropriate • Most of our everyday stressors do not require physical responses • Example-an exam, a mess left by a brother or sister, a red traffic light

  12. Fight or Flight Response • During the fight or flight response, your body provides you with the energy, reflexes, and strength you may need to respond to the stressor. As part of the fight or flight response, your body releases epinephrine (adrenaline). This helps your body do the following: • Breathing speeds up, to increase oxygen in your body • Heart rate increases which provides more blood to the body • Muscles tense to move quickly • Pupils widen to let in light • Digestion slows down, because it is unneccessary in an emergency • Blood sugar increases to provide more fuel

  16. Long-term Effects of Uncontrolled Stress • Headache • A weakened immune system • High blood pressure • Bruxism (clenching of the jaw or grinding of the teeth) • Digestive disorders

  18. Stress Reducers 1. Simplify and unclutter your life 2. Go to bed on time and get up on time 3. Take one day at a time 4. Allow extra time to do things 5. Live within a budget 6. Daily exercise 7. Eat right 8. Be organized 9. Write things down 10. Take a bubble bath 11. Join a team, group or organization 12. Go to the movies 13. Volunteer

(10 points) • When finished turn it in. Then pick up the Stress Review and complete it. Turn it in when finished.
