  3. British raj 1818-1857 • Company controlled, govt. support • Social reform reflected british values • ABIDED BY INDIAN CUSTOMS TO GAIN SUPPORT • SEPOY REBELLION: MUSLIM AND HINDU SOLDIERS IN BRITISH ARMY REBELLED, CONTROVERSIAL MILITARY TECHNIQUE • BEGINNINGS OF INDIAN NATIONALISM

The crown rules • British east india company removed due to rebellion • Increase in british officials • Increased industrialization, production of poppy, cotton • Negative: heightened antagonism, strict segregation • Positive: telegraph, railroad, irrigation systems (long-term positive effect)

  5. Indian nationalism • Allowed mid-level government positions • Educated at british schools and universities • Indian national congress: 1885, formed to promote political unity and employ more Indians in the british civil service • 1906 all-indiamuslim league
