  5. What is a Universal Screener? Brief assessment given to all students. It is used to identify students’ skill levels.

  6. First Critical Step • Universal Screener (3 times per year) • SKILLS BASED • http://www.rti4success.org/screeningTools • Reading and Math • Form a Universal Screening Team • Train Screeners to Give the Test with Fidelity. • Teach the Team How to Report the Data Clearly. • Use the Data to Help Identify Students that are On- Level, Moderately Delayed or Severely At-Risk.

  7. Universal Screeners Standards Based Screener Skills Based Screener

  8. Step Two AccurateandFluent Accurate/NotFluent NotAccurate/ Fluent NotAccurate/ NotFluent Analyze Screening Data Divide students into four groups based on the Universal Screener data

  9. Sample Grouping Form

  10. Step Three • Diagnostic Tests • Only for students not on grade level based on Universal Screener • Used to pinpoint the students’ greatest area of need for remediation • PASI (Phonological Awareness Screening Instrument) • PSI (Phonics Screening Instrument ) • Spelling Inventory • Running Records • Math Diagnostic Test • We use Pearson, our adopted math series

  11. S.E.S. RTI Schedule

  12. Step Four • Establish Schedule and Groups • Put students together with similar skill deficits • Walk to Intervention Groups • Self-Contained Groups • Delivered by most qualified interventionist that has had adequate professional development • Systematic, intense, targeted small group instruction

  13. Sample Group Maps

  14. Sample Grouping Chart

  15. Vital Fifth Step • Select Scientifically Based Researched Materials for Intervention • Reliable and valid results • Adequate gains expected • Clear record of success • Meet NCLB requirements

  16. SBR Requirements • Must be teacher friendly • Can not require a lot of teacher planning • Train and supervise interventionist • The interventionist will only be as effective as the training • Overseen by administration for fidelity • Logistics • Where will the groups go for intervention • What will the core students do during intervention

  17. Effective Intervention Lessons Plan Visual (see) Auditory (hear) Kinesthetic/tactile (touch) Must transfer skill to text.

  18. Step Six • Progress Monitoring • More at-risk students must be progress monitored weekly or bi-weekly. • Make progress monitoring mimic the skill being remediated. • Keep it simple, quick and easy. • Use progress monitoring data to adjust instruction • Keep record of intervention and progress monitoring data for groups
