  1. Status of muon system after first run • System relies on the work of many very dedicated people (experts) that now are exhausted and some have left or are going to leave the Muons • Most of these people have participated in the Muon Steering Group (SG) • There have been rotations in the SG • almost all the tasks has changed coordinators in the last 5 years • But…Still some tasks are lead by the same coordiantors • Now is very difficult to find new ones (for all tasks) • The amount of REAL NEW experts is very small (almost 0) • Shut Down period unique opportunity to form new experts to manage the muons in the next years • Very difficult task, but failing it will mean that the muons will not have fresh people to manage the system in the next years.

  2. Muon system during the Shut down • Main activities: • DAQ: • CSC new ROD (production and commissioning) • Understand and solve TGC DAQ problem • Unify DAQ tools across systems • DCS • Install new PCs and interfaces • Improve shifter tools • Include new chambers (EE, elevator and feet region) • Link between DCS and DQA • Detectors • Standard gas and electronics maintenance • Installation of new chambers (EE, feet, elevator) • Repair of CSC in side C • Replacement of tenths of TGCs chambers Very few “OLD” experts No real new one Some rotation with experts: MDT Need to reinforce CSC, TGC and RPC Essentially always the same people since the construction Some new people helped in the EE commissioning getting expertise in MDT TGC some new people entered the game RPC and CSC are loosing experts

  3. Muon system during the Shut down • Main activities: • Software: • Software optimization (third chain) • Improvement in physics validation • B-lines ……+Many other tasks • DQA • Streamline the DQA system after the experience of the first run • Calibration • Optimization and automatization • Documentation • Alignment • As built geometry (Xtomo) • Inclusion of BEE in optical system (also hardware) • Inclusion of elevator chambers • Merging of barrel and end cap alignment software • Use of Curved tracks in specific regions. • NSW Upgrade • TDR presentation + module zero construction+ collaboration consolidation and real work towards the serial production New expert needed, quite critical situation Many young people contribution but missing expert people to guide the effort Always same people in charge Many people/institute interested, Main problem can be the draining of resources from the muon system to the NSW

  4. Qualification tasks • The qualification task mechanism has not been very effective! • Most of the people is doing the qualification task “with their left hand” just because they are obliged and leaving the task AS SOON AS qualified • This is a waste of resources for our experts that invest a lot of time in teaching the newcomers and then get frustrated. • In the Muons we are going to apply a much stronger control on the qualification tasks, requiring periodical presentations in the relevant forums BUT it will not solve the problem. • We would like to have Institute Level commitment on the tasks. • This problem is also coming from the very little importance that is given to any technical work ( Software, Hardware, Operation or Performance) • Ex: • Oliver Kortner says “Being convener of MCP was very interesting but totally bad for my career.

  5. The main Problem • The problem of not having people in the technical tasks is mainly coming from the very little importance that is given to any technical work ( Software, Hardware, Operation or Performance) • Ex: • Oliver Kortner says “Being convener of MCP was very interesting but totally bad for my career”. • Rosy Nikolaidou : “ Being software coordinator in the muon was totally detrimental for my career since now I am considered at the level of a technician”. • +Many many other examples.

  6. What can we do? • Give more weight to people working on detector activities (maintenance and Operation, Software, Performance etc.) • Strong Help to get jobs • Give priority for conference talks • Was OK for the muons but very bad for MCP • Try to get more involvement of “detector people “ in the physics groups (good example Higgs Mass discrepancy, but quite isolated). • Attitude of Physics groups: Performance groups give us the Scaling and Smearing Factors and we apply them….”
