  1. Does 5 Hour Energy Drink Elevate Heart Rate of Daphnia? Seayer Zadran, Nesar Zadran, Christopher Wei, Javier Elías Manteca High School METHODS We had two beakers one which was control and other experimental with the energy drink added. We used a micro pipette to get the daphnia and put it on a slide. Both groups had three Daphnia's heart beat counted for two minutes under a microscope. ABSTRACT Our goal in this experiment was to test if 5 Hour Energy Drink would affect the heart rate of Daphnia over a period of 5 hours. We added 1 milliliter of 5 hour energy drink to 250 milliliters of water. We had two separated groups. The control group with only the Daphnia and the experimental group with the energy drink added to the water. Overall, the Daphnia's heart rate did increase over 5 hours. Control: Blue Experimental: Red Daphnia 1) 43* Daphnia 1) 81* Daphnia 2) 45* Daphnia 2) 75* Daphnia 3) 35* Daphnia 3) 68* *Numbers indicate heart beat over two minutes. Heart rate was taken 5 hours after the drug. DISCUSSION The energy drink almost doubled the heart rate of the daphnia. However, the daphnia in the experimental group died and the control group lived. Based on this conclusion, it might mean humans will also die faster when using energy drinks. It will be necessary to repeat this experiment with a larger sample size. Another issue was the sample of Daphnia's were small and didn't fully allow us to see the heart. Instead, we measured the contractions of the digestive system. INTRODUCTION We added 5 Hour Energy Drink to the experimental group and the Daphnia's took in the water with energy drink. After a period of five hours we counted the heart beat of the Daphnia and compared it to the control group.
