Overview of fungi • Heterotrophs • Extracellular digestion • Some fungi capable of digesting lignin • Non-cellulose, chitin-impregnated cell walls • Nonflagellated sperm • Most fungi are composed of a mycelium, a mass of filamentous hyphae that may be septate or aseptate • Except in the zygote, all fungi nuclei are haploid • Fungi Phyla are differentiated by mode of reproduction

  3. In zygomycetes, hyphae fuse and produce a hard walled zygote that undergoes meiosis at germination
