  3. Roles they played… • King George III - British King during the war • King George III was known as the king who lost America • had large debts to pay, and thought he could extract the necessary money from the colonies

  4. Lord Cornwallis • Lord Cornwallis- British General; Surrendered at Yorktown • Cornwallis opposed nearly all of the British policies that led to the American Revolution. • But he was a loyal soldier

  5. George Washington • George Washington - Commander of the Continental Army • Washington was responsible for the overall direction of the war • Washington took command of the troops surrounding British-occupied Boston on July 3, 1775

  6. Washington • Washington crossed the Delaware River on Christmas night 1776 • Brilliantly planned and executed the Yorktown Campaign against Charles Cornwallis • securing (Oct. 19, 1781) the American victory.

  7. Patrick Henry • Patrick Henry - Outspoken member of the House of Burgesses; inspired patriotism with his famous saying "Give me liberty or give me death”

  8. Patrick Henry • embodied the spirit of American courage and patriotism.  • the orator of liberty • first voice raised against England in her attempt to impose taxation without representation • greatest contribution to the nation was in working toward the adoption of the Bill of Rights

  9. Roles they played… • Thomas Jefferson - Author of Declaration of Independence • powerful advocate of liberty • Benjamin Franklin - Prominent member of Continental Congress; helped frame the Declaration of Independence • Helped secure French Alliance

Thomas Paine • Thomas Paine - Journalist, author of Common Sense (January 10, 1776) *strong defense of American Independence from England *sooner or later independence from England must come *America had lost touch with the mother country • He joined the Continental Army • In 1777 he became Secretary of the Committee of Foreign Affairs in Congress

Paul Revere • Paul Revere - Patriot who made a ride to warn patriots that the British were coming • “Messenger of the Revolution” • April 18, 1775: warned Boston-area residents that the British were coming • Samuel Prescott & William Dawes: part of the ride • Samuel Prescott was the only one who made it Listen my children and you shall hearOf the midnight ride of Paul Revere,On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-five;Hardly a man is now aliveWho remembers that famous day and year.
