  1. 09-09-13 Lab Safety Quiz Today! • Turn in syllabus, lab safety contract & TMNT lab review • Quiz: Lab Safety • Class Expectations • Please record today’s schedule & homework in your planner & answer the following on your early work sheet (IQIA). • What are 3 safety rules that you should always follow in the science lab? Do Now Schedule • None Homework

  2. 09-09-13 Learning Objective I will contribute to a safe, respectful, and effective learning environment.

  3. 09-10-13 • Finish Class Expectations • Science Binder • Observations & Inferences • Please record today’s schedule & homework in your planner & answer the following on your early work sheet. • List 3 observations about the contents of our classroom. Schedule Do Now • None Homework

  4. 09-10-13 Learning Objective I can explain the difference between qualitative & quantitative observations.

  5. Observations & Inferences Observation: An act of noting and recording an event, characteristic, behavior, or anything else detected with an instrument or with the senses. Qualitative observation: An observation made using your 5 senses. [sights, sounds, smells, tastes, & textures] Quantitative observation: An observation that is expressed in numbers. [time, temperature, mass, distance, & volume] Inference: A logical conclusion drawn from available evidence and prior knowledge.

  6. OREO COOKIE OBSERVATIONS Qualitative Quantitative Inferences

  7. 09-11-13 • Procedures • Please record today’s schedule & homework in your planner & answer the following on your Do Now sheet. • Explain the difference between qualitative & quantitative observations. Schedule Do Now • None Homework

  8. 09-11-13 Learning Objective I can write a detailed procedure for a lab investigation.

  9. Which of the following are observations and which are inferences? • A man was fishing from a dock. • 2. The lighthouse is on land. • 3. There is a tackle box on the dock. • 4. A fish bit the dock. • 5. A man was eaten by a fish.

  10. Purpose/Problem Statement: • Do double stuf Oreos actually have twice as much filling as a regular Oreo?

  11. Materials: • 1 double stuf Oreo • 1 regular Oreo • Triple-beam balance • Ruler • Calculator

  12. Procedure: • Gather lab materials. • Carefully twist off one side of the cookie from both Oreos. • Measure the mass (g) of the cookie with no filling on it for both cookies using the balance. • Record the number of grams in the data table.

  13. Procedure: • Measure the mass (g) of each cookie with the filling on it using the balance. • Record the number of grams in the data table. • Calculate the mass of filling by subtracting the cookie mass (g) from the cookie + filling mass (g). • Record the difference (g) in the data table.

  14. Procedure: • Record the results from 3 other groups. • Calculate the average mass (g) of filling and record this value in the data table. • Clean up!

  15. 09-12-13 • Oreo Lab: Data Table, Variables, Hypothesis & Data Collection • Please record today’s schedule & homework in your planner. • List 3 things that you need to include when writing a lab procedure. Schedule Do Now • None Homework

  16. 09-12-13 Learning Objective I can correctly identify variables & write a hypothesis for a lab.

  17. Got Stuf?

  18. Regular Oreo Data

  19. Double Stuf Oreo Data

  20. Identification of Variables: • Manipulated: Type of Oreo – double stuf or regular. • Responding: The mass (g) of the filling. • Controlled: • Triple-beam balance • Method used.

  21. Hypothesis/Prediction • Write a hypothesis using the IF, THEN, BECAUSE format. • IF double stuf and regular Oreos are compared THEN the double stuf Oreo will have twice the amount of filling of the regular Oreo BECAUSE Nabisco isn’t allowed to falsely advertise their cookies.

  22. 09-13-13 • Oreo Lab: Analysis & Graphs • Please record today’s schedule & homework in your planner. • What 3 key words must be found in a hypothesis? Schedule Do Now • None Homework

  23. 09-13-13 Learning Objective I can analyze & graph the results of a lab.
