  1. It’s Radical, but is it Right? The House Church Movement

  2. What Do The Scriptures Say? We have an obligation to examine what is taught in light of God’s revealed word! (1 John 4:1; Romans 16:17-18; Matthew 7:15-20; Acts 17:11)

  3. Are local churches to meet as small groups in homes? • LaGard Smith says YES! • The Scriptures say NO! • LaGard Smith’s evidence is highly conjectural (Romans 16:3-5; Acts 20:20; 12:12) • The Biblical evidence is that churches in cities like Ephesus DID NOT meet as small groups in homes (Romans 16:16; Acts 20:4-8; 17-28; 19:9)

  4. Are local churches to meet as small groups in homes? Important Facts about the meeting places of other New Testament churches: • The temple was used as the meeting place for the church in Jerusalem (Acts 2:46; 5:12) • The disciples in Troas met in a three story building with “many lights” (Acts 20:4-9) • The church in Corinth all met together in one place (Acts 18:7; 1 Corinthians 14:23) • There were several households in the church (Acts 18:8; 1 Corinthians 1:11, 16) • There was a difference between what was to be done in church and what was to be done in ones own house (1 Corinthians 14:35; 11:34)

  5. Is the Worship of the Church to be Informal? LaGard Smith says YES! The Scriptures say NO! • 1 Corinthians 14:26 does not indicate that “everyone” took a speaking or leading role in the worship of the church. • Limitations are given in the context (14:27-28) • Women were not to speak (14:34-35)

  6. Is the Worship of the Church to be Informal? • The informal & spontaneous worship in Corinth was the very thing Paul condemned and corrected by divine order (1 Corinthians 14:33, 40). All things were to be done decently and in order! • “Decently” is translated from εὐσχημόνως (euschēmonōs). It means “in a seemly manner” (Thayer) or “decorously” (Strong) • “Order” is from τάξις (taxis) which is “an arranging, arrangement…a fixed succession observing a fixed time…due or right order, orderly condition” (Thayer)

  7. The House Church: A Trojan House The real impact of the house church movement is that it separates those who are unlearned & easily impressionable from the wisdom, oversight, guidance and Bible knowledge found in established local churches.
