  2. Korea • One, independent country until 1910 • Japan forced them to sign treaty, became part of Japan • Remained this way until end of WWII

  4. Post- WWII • The Allies (including the US and the Soviet Union (now Russia)) defeated the Axis powers (including Germany and Japan). • Japan’s territories were taken away, including Korea • Communist Russia and China had influence in the North, while the US had influence in the South

  5. Post- WWII • The US-backed South held elections, which the North did not support, so they officially formed a separate government • North- Democratic People’s Republic of Korea(DPRK) • South- Republic of Korea(ROK) • Divide occurred along 38th parallel

  7. Korean War • In the 1950s, both Koreas tried to rule the whole territory • US sent troops to back democratic South against Communist North • Soviet Union sent troops to help North • A cease-fire was signed, but no peace treaty • Still officially at war

  8. Rulers • Kim Il-Sung- founder of North Korea • Kim Jong-Il- Kim Il-Sung’s son, took over after his death • Kim Jong-Il died Dec 17th, 2011 • His son, Kim Jong-Un, was picked to replace him • All members of “Workers Party”

  9. Rulers • These rulers are absolute dictators that demand obedience • They create a “cult of personality” that creates a religion-like following • North Korea is isolated- its residents are cut-off from the rest of the world by the government
