  2. splay • Verb • To spread something wide and outward; turned awkwardly outward • Auggie’s teeth were splayed in his mouth, even after his many facial surgeries.

  3. fashionista • Noun • A “follower” or “fan” of clothing and the fashion industry • Summer was no fashionista; she could care less about the most popular sneaker styles.

  4. nauseous • Adjective or noun • Sick feeling in the stomach • Auggie was so nervous Day 1 that he felt nauseous.

  5. celestial • Adjective • Heavenly or related to the sky • Auggie wanted to paint stars and other celestial objects on his bedroom ceiling.

  6. catastrophe • Noun • A disaster or total failure • Rather than the cafeteria experience being a catastrophe, Summer made it a more comfortable experience for Auggie.

  7. mischievous • Adjective • Playfully troublesome; full of mischief; damaging • Julian’s “jokes” went beyond mischievous fun.

  8. bizarre • Adjective • Very odd • So many kids wore bizarre costumes on Halloween that Auggiefelt right at home.

  9. inappropriate • Adjective • Not acceptable or proper • Jack Will acted inappropriate when he spoke about Auggie in a mean way behind his back.

  10. sarcastic • Adjective • Mocking; full of sarcasm; having a funny/mean tone • Julian was often sarcastic; causing him to be viewed as sneaky and mean.

  11. pettiness • Noun • Narrow-minded; nit-picky, insignificant • The argument was filled with so much pettiness that it began to sound silly.

  12. meticulously • Adverb • Precisely; exactly; done in a way that requires extreme effort and perfection • Auggie’s mom meticulously cut his sandwich in small squares so he could safely eat each piece.

  13. flabbergasted • Verb or adjective • To completely astonish, surprise, or amaze someone • Mr. Tushman would be flabbergasted to learn that Julian was no angel.
