What do you think? • How far away is the moon? • The moon is at an average distance of 238,855 miles • (Did you know there’s an app for that?!!) • How big is it? • The Moon is approximately 27% the size of the Earth • You would need 81 objects with the mass of the Moon to match the mass of the Earth! • The surface area of the Moon is 37.9 million square kilometers • The continent of Asia is 44.4 million square km

  4. How long did it take astronauts to travel there? • It took three days to get to the Moon • How long would it take you to drive there? • Travelling at 65mph, it would take about 153 days, 2 hours and 34 minutes to drive to the Moon (without traffic!!) What do you think?

  6. Fun Fact! • The Apollo 11 spacecraft was equipped for its mission to the Moon with a state-of-the-art on-board computer. The CPU ran at a pace of 1 Megahertz, and the system memory was 36K in size. • Currently, the typical home computer is equipped with a CPU running at least 800 MHz and many hand-held calculators contain more than 36K memory.

  13. How was the Moon formed? • The moon was probably once a piece of the Earth that came off when an asteroid (as big as Mars!) hit the Earth about 3.5 to 4.5 billion years ago.
