  1. Is music our friend? by Harthwell C. Capistrano, RN

  2. Revelations 14:12 (KJV) Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

  3. Neuroscientists Daniel and Bernadette Skubik provide a concise explanation of how the rock beat affects the muscles, the mind, and the hormone levels.

  4. "Rhythm for which drums provide or generate the basic beat, produces measurable responses in the body’s muscular system, brainwave patterns and hormone levels.

  5. Daniel and Bernardette Skubik (note 19), p. 187s • Briefly, (1) muscle coordination and control become synchronized with the basic beat; • (2) brainwave activity itself aligns with the rhythm so generated; and • (3) various hormones (specifically, opiates and sex hormones) are released as a result of electrophysiological synchronization with the rhythm.

  6. Where did rock ’n’ roll and hard rock come from? • Earnest Budge has traced this strange music from Egypt to West Central Africa, where it still exists (Osiris, p. 34). • Rodney H. Mill, former Music Specialist at the Library of Congress, explains how this pagan dance music (used in fertility rituals and to make contact with demons) traveled west:

  7. “Brought to the American continents with the slaves and incubated in the voodooism of the Caribbean region, the resultant mixture made landfall at New Orleans in the first decade of the twentieth century. There, in the brothels of that city’s notorious Storyville district, it developed into jazz.

  8. “The use of syncopated rhythms, with their ability to alter states of consciousness, stem from ancient Egypt. It is to Egypt that historians trace the origin of drum-syncopated music and its uses. In the temples, priests intentionally employed complex syncopation in order to induce trances and other disturbances (Pennethorne Hughes, Witchcraft, p. 23; cited in Ismael Reed, Mumbo Jumbo, p. 191).

  9. “Primitive percussionists learned to induce physiological responses, from ecstasy and hallucinations to seizures and unconsciousness (Michael Segell, “Rhythmitism,” American Health, December 1988, pp. 19, 37).

  10. “Through the slave trade, this devil-worship music, with its incessant beat, was carried to the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean. Here again it took root. Today, voodoo is still practiced in Haiti.

  11. “As the slave trade continued, the rhythm was transported to the United States. New Orleans became a hotbed for the new pounding of drums and the erratic dancing that accompanied it.”

  12. In marked contrast from the pagan music of Africa, which is based on polyrhythms (odd and multiple rhythms and beats), Christian music is keyed to harmony and melody. This simple melodic music was used to worship the true God, the Creator of heaven and earth.

  13. "Was Satan in charge of music in Heaven?" • Ezekiel 28:13 of the KJV and NKJV seems to hint that Satan was involved with music in Heaven. • The NKJV says, “The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes was prepared for you on the day you were created,” although the exact meaning of this difficult Hebrew text is uncertain. • There may have been such instruments in heaven, but there is no evidence outside this verse to verify it. Revelation 5:8 and 15:2 refers to harps, but not to timbrels or pipes.

  14. "Was Satan the head musician in Heaven?" • This cannot be answered definitively. • Scripture does not say enough about what his duties were in heaven. Considering the fact that the angels constantly worship God (Isaiah 6:3; Revelation 4:8), it is possible that Satan led that worship. One thing is sure: for Satan to rebel despite having such an exalted position and close relationship with God, the devil is surely due his eternal destiny (Revelation 20:10).

  16. The greatest deceiver led the heavenly choir. • “The hour for joyful, happy songs of praise to God and His dear Son had come. Satan had led the heavenly choir. He had raised the first note, then all the angelic host had united with him, and glorious strains of music had resounded through heaven in honor of God and His dear Son.” (Story of Redemption, p. 25)

  17. The greatest deceiver led the heavenly choir. • Old man, Old serpent, Lucifer, Satan Revelation 20: 2 (KJV) “And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years.” Romans 6:6 (KJV) “Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.”

  18. I Write the Song by Barry Manilow I've been alive forever, and I wrote the very first song. I put the words and the melodies together, I am music, and I write the songs. I write the songs that make the whole world sing. I write the songs of love and special thing s. I write the songs that make the young girls cry. I write the songs, I write the songs.

  19. I Write the Song by Barry Manilow My home lies deep within you, and I've got my own place in your sole. Now, when I look out through your eyes, I'm yours again, even though I'm very old. I write the songs that make the whole world sing. I write the songs of love and special things. I write the songs that make the young girls cry. I write the songs, I write the songs.

  20. I Write the Song by Barry Manilow Oh my music makes you dance and gives your spiri t to take a chance, and I wrote some rock 'n' roll so you can move. Music fills your heart, well, that's a real fine place to start. It's from me it's for you, it's from you, it's from me, it's a world wide symphony.

  21. Consider some other testimonies by secular authorities about the intimate association between drums and voodoo and magic. These examples are from Bible Guidelines for Music by Terry Watkins:

  22. “[Drum] represents the beat of the heart and is played to summon up magic powers” (Miranda Bruce-Mitford, The Illustrated Book of Signs & Symbols, DK Publishing, 1996 p. 80). • In Siberia, in northern Asia, drums are used in shamanic rituals to heal people. It is believed that THE SHAMAN CAN COMMUNICATE WITH THE SPIRIT WORLD THROUGH DRUMMING (Louise Tythacott, Musical Instruments, Thomas Learning, 1995, p. 37).

  23. TODAY’S DRUMMER DIFFERS BUT LITTLE FROM THE SHAMAN IN HIS INCESSANT BEATING OUT OF A RHYTHM, AND LIKEWISE OFTEN ENTERS INTO A FORM OF TRANCE WHILE PERFORMING” (David Tame, The Secret Power of Music, p. 199).

  24. Palmer describes how drums are used in “voodoo” possession. • “Bata drummers tap out their toques, or rhythm patterns, like SIGNALS TO THE REALM OF THE GODS, inviting and enticing them to come on down and mount or POSSESS their horses, or devotees. . .THE SPECIFIC DRUM PATTERNS OR TOQUES INCLUDE SOME RIFFS AND LICKS BASIC TO THE ROCK AND ROLL vocabulary” (Palmer, Rock & Roll An Unruly History, p. 62).

  25. Rock music is an extreme form of rock ‘n’ roll • “Rock ‘n’ roll: The term is a blues euphemism for sexual intercourse.” -- The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock and Roll. • “Rock ‘n’ roll is 99% sex– John Oates. • “Everybody takes it for granted that rock ‘n’ roll is synonymous with sex – Frank Zappa. • “You cannot take sex out of rock and roll or rhythm and blues– Kathleen Sullivan, quoted in Martha Bayles, Hole in our Soul, p. 349 • In 1990, there are at least 13 bands named after the male genitals– US News and World Report, March 19, 1990.

  26. “Rock music has one appeal only, a barbaric appeal to sexual desire—not to a pure, unselfish love, but sexual desire underdeveloped and untutored. Young people know that rock has the beat of sexual intercourse– Dr. Allan Bloom, Closing of the American Mind. • “Rock music motivates you internally, gives you a sensual feeling. A girl can be turned on by the music. It releases her inhibition. The beat of the drum has always been a factor. A girl realizes her own sexuality through the music– Mike Quatro, quoted in Ira Peck, The New Sound, Yes, p. 112.

  27. Effects of Rock Music • Songs with violent lyrics increase aggression related thoughts and emotions and this effect is directly related to the violence in the lyrics, according to a new study published by the American Psychological Association (APA). The findings, appearing in the May issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, contradicts popular notions of positive catharsis or venting effects of listening to angry, violent music on violent thoughts and feelings.http://www.apa.org/releases/violentsongs.html

  28. Effects of Rock Music • It says that (to provide some empirical evidence) neurologists and a physicist recently teamed up to put this claim to a test through three groups of mice. • One group listened to no music, another to Mozart, and a third to rock music. But first they ran the mice through a maze to establish a base time of 10 minutes. • Then they separated the mice in their distinctive groups.

  29. Effects of Rock Music • After one month, the mice that listened to no musical at all reduced the time taken to navigate the maze by half (five minutes). • The mice that listened to Mozart did even better. They navigated the maze in only one-and-a-half minutes. • The rock music mice "bumped their way through the maze" taking 30 minutes. • Eventually, the experiment came to a halt due to the rock music mice eating one another.

  30. Effects of Rock Music • To determine why the rock music mice were having so much trouble, the researchers examined their brains. • Sure enough, they found abnormal branching and sprouting of the nerve cells and disruptions in the normal amounts of messenger RNA, a chemical crucial to memory storage. • This could help explain why rock music listeners are more prone to use drugs and engage in extramarital sex, and why heavy metal listeners are much more likely to consider suicide.

  31. Effects of Rock Music • generates or enhances sexual arousal • Release of gonadotrophins as well as opioids. • The result is a strong connection forged between a stressed fight-or-flight drive state and the young person’s developing sexual drive, which then invariably links arousal to aggression. . . . As rock music has moved farther away from its historical roots and medium (viz. folk music), it both causes and expresses an increasing association of overt aggression linked to sexuality."

  32. Which is better? MUSIC A MUSIC B

  33. Unveiling a Master Plan • In 1985, Jacab Aranza attested: • “What’s next in the rock music world?”

  34. Four step plan in rock music • 1955 – 1965 (free sex) • 1965 – 1970 arouse the spirit of young people towards drugs, rebellion, and anti-establishment movements. • 1970 – 1980 loud beats and violents tones • 1980 – onwards - - -‘We have found,’ he said, ‘that the greatest commitment anyone makes is a religious one. That would be the greatest motivator to get people to buy rock records. So, beginning in the 1980s, we will bring rock into mainline Christianity.’ ”— Jacob Aranza.

  35. Four step plan in rock music • Finally, in the early 1980s, rock knocked on the doors of Christian homes and churches.

  36. Take Note! • “Music was made to serve a holy purpose, to lift the thoughts to that which is pure, noble, and elevating, and to awaken in the soul devotion and gratitude to God.

  37. A WARNING • . Many will loose the incense of singing. The devil will use that as a loop hole to cause divisions in the church of God. He will cause many to wrestle against their fellow brethren in form of singing groups. Their hearts will be filled with pride as they will be singing. Gathering popularity and glory for themselves not knowing that bit by bit a curse is falling upon their heads.

  38. A WARNING • Religious rock music or CCM, by whatever name, is hedonistic, and hedonistic music can hardly contribute to build a strong spirituality. • "No matter how one might try, or what one believes, musical immaturity does not produce holistic Christian maturity."

  39. Led Zepplin - Stairway to HeavenMessage - "Glory glory to my sweet satan, there was a little child born, it makes me sad, whose power is satan" • Truth - This message is somewhat clear, but again, most likely coincidental. It's just surprising how many english words when play backwards sound like "satan". • Led Zepplin - Stairway to Heaven 2Message - "...'cause I live with Satan" • Truth - Most likely not inte`nded. This song has had it's share of controversy about the backmasking, but it just doesn't seem like they did it on purpose.

  40. Beatles - Strawberry Fields ForeverMessage - "I worship satan" • Truth - UNINTENTIONAL • Beatles - I Am Tired Message - "Paul is a dead man, miss him, miss him, MISS HIM" • Truth - The beatles have vehemently denied this. Still fans of every generation have listened to this message and heard the same words.

  41. Eagles - Hotel CaliforniaMessage - "Yeah satan, oh he came, and organized his own religion. Yeah when he knowns he shouldn't..." • Truth - Almost definately unintentional. While the end of this clip supposedly says something, we're not entirely sure what it's supposed to say. This is coincidence. • Rolling Stones – Tops Message - "I love you, said the Devil." • Truth - UNINTENTIONAL • Cheap Trick - Gonna Raise Hell Message - "Satan holds the key to the lock." • Truth - UNINTENTIONAL

  42. Queen - We are the Champions Message - "Masters of evil" • Truth - UNINTENTIONAL • ACDC - Back in Black Message - "I love Satan, alright. And Satan knows I love Him. Love Him. Love Him!" • Truth - UNINTENTIONALNOTE: Props to WolfOfDark77! • Michael Jackson - Beat It Message - "I believe it was Satan in me." • Truth - UNINTENTIONAL

  43. *NSYNC - Dirty Pop Message - "I belong with Satan. I will stay with him. I will know the way." • Truth - UNINTENTIONAL • Blondie - Do the Dark Message - "Help, help, help, help me. Satan is moving in me." • Truth - UNINTENTIONALNOTE: Special thanks to Debbie Fox for pointing this one out.

  44. What Ellen G. White says? • God has not left His remnant church without counsel concerning music, noise and confusion. Some think that the louder they sing the more music they make; but noise is not music. Good singing is like the music of the birds-subdued and melodious. Evangelism, 510

  45. Warning! • “There will be shouting, with drums, music and dancing .The Holy Spirit never reveals itself in such methods, in such a bedlam of noise. The powers of satanic agencies blend with the din of noise, to have a carnival, and this is termed the Holy Spirit working. The Holy Spirit has nothing to do with such a confusion of noise and multitude of sounds as passed before me last January.

  46. God calls upon His people who have the light before them in the word and in the testimonies, to read and consider, and to take heed. Clear and definite instruction has been given in order that all may understand.” Selected Messages Volume 2, p. 36-38.

  47. "Music is acceptable to God only when the heart is sanctified and made soft and holy by its faculties. But many who delight in music know nothing of making melody in their hearts to the Lord. The heart is gone "after their idols." Evangelism p. 512. Music can be an idol!!!

  48. “Music was made to serve a holy purpose, to lift the thoughts to that which is pure, noble and elevating, and to awaken in the soul devotion and gratitude to God. Zephaniah 3:17 (King James Version) •  17The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.

  49. Does the use of Christian Rock and Pop music help us to hear the Word of God more clearly? • Does it tend to give us a greater vision of the glory of God? Does the beat, rhythm and syncopations express the purity, majesty, holiness and serenity of God? Music about God should be like God. It should reflect him, magnify him and reveal his character.
