Drill 5/22: • Many of you have mentioned frustration over the timeline of Things Fall Apart. This book has a rather long expository section, meaning, Achebe spends many chapters on the setting, characters, and major conflict(s). For each one of those highlighted terms, write a sentence describing what Achebe has established at this point in the story.
Agenda • Drill • Read chapter 7 in groups. • Discuss the character of Ikemefuna.
Guiding Questions: • What does the tribe decide must happen to Ikemefuna? • What is Okonkwo told about his involvement in this act? • What does Okonkwo actually do? Why?
Getting a little deeper • Why do you think Ikemefuna a necessary character in the story? What does he reveal about Okonkwo, and/or what does his character’s presence force from Okonkwo? Find at least one quotation from chapter 7 to support your assertions.
Learning Targets: • I can decipher literature independently or with the help of peers. • I can participate meaningfully in a class discussion. • I can analyze deceptively simple texts by implementing close reading strategies. • I can cite strong and thorough textual evidence that supports my inferences and analysis of the text. • I can analyze the development of the theme throughout a text including how it is shaped by specific details and events. • I can analyze a point of view or cultural experience as reflected in a work from outside the US.
