Course Content • Network overview • Basic principles of network components • Information, telephone systems, transmission media, access, multiplexing, switching, synchronization, signaling, etc. • Network design and evolution • Standards, planning, cellular, WiFi, WPAN, wireless, broadband ATM, the internet, optical networks, multihop networks, network evolution • Network operation, security • Network management and control, Bell CO + GNMC visit, Bell Mobility visit • Political, business, and entrepreneurial aspects • Economic/financial analysis, federal telecommunications policy, CRTC regulation • How to start an IT company

  8. Marking • Bell Central Office + GNMC tour: 5% • Bell Mobility Switching Centre tour: 5% • Attendance (17 out of the 22 lectures): 10% • Mid-term exam: 15% (Thursday, Feb 13) • Assignments: 5% • Project: 15% • Final Exam: 45%

Schedule • Lectures: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 8:35 – 9:55 am, 208 TB • Laboratory: Thursdays, 2:35 pm – 5:25 pm, 507 AA (Architecture Building) • Laboratories consist of a number of components: • a) Bell Central Office (CO) and Global Network Management Centre (GNMC) tour (compulsory) • b) Bell Mobility Switching Centre tour (compulsory) Sign-up sheets will be posted next to my office door (7032 MC) • c) TA office hours (Thursdays, 2:35 pm – 5:25 pm, 507 AA) • d) Group project meetings • Labs are starting on Thursday, January 9

  10. Important Points • Easy (not too technical); difficult (very broad). • Attend all the lectures. Do not loose the 10% attendance mark. • At least half of the exam questions will be from Prof. Yanikomeroglu’s lectures. • Check the course website regularly! • Ask questions - most of the lecturers are from industry or government. They will expect and appreciate questions, even more than professors do. • There will be many acronyms. If you don’t know them, ask!
