  2. Program Completion Information Elementary Special Education 124 credits 2.5 overall GPA 48 credits General Education 76 credits Education courses 4 Blocks, plus 1 summer/some evenings • 130 credits • 2.5 overall GPA • 67 credits General Education • 63 credits Education courses • 4 Blocks

  3. Understanding the Application Process • Application deadline for students starting Block 1 in Fall is February 15. • Application deadline for Spring is October 15. • 50 seats available: first come-first served.

  4. Application Criteria • 55 semester hours, including current semester, towards General Ed. requirements. (no developmental courses) • EDUC-F200, SPCH-S121, ENG-W131, MATH-T101, all completed with a “C” or better. • Completed, or be enrolled in, all Language Arts content courses. • Overall GPA of at least 2.50 (no rounding up) • “C” or better in all Language Arts and Math content courses. • Passing score on Praxis 1 tests or alternatives. Application Criteria Successful completion of ONE course from theSocial Studies Content Block (“D-” or better) Elementary: • ECON-E100, E150, or E101 (Economics) • GEOG-G201 (World Regional Geography) • SOC-R220 (The Family) • HIST-H105 or H106 (American History I or II) • POLS-Y103 (Introduction to American Politics) • HIST-H101 (World in the 20th Century) Special Education: • POLS-Y103, Y107, Y109 (Political Science) • HIST-H105, H106 (American History) or GEOG-G110 (Human Geography) • SOC-S163 (Social Problems) or GEOG-G201 (World Regional Geography)

  6. Application Criteria Successful completion of ONE course from the Science Content Block (“D-” or better.) Elementary: • BIOL-L100 (Humans & the Biological World) • CHEM-C104 (Physical Science & Society) • GEOG-G107 (Physical Systems of the Environment) Special Education: • BIOL-L100 (Humans & the Biological World) • CHEM-C104 (Physical Science & Society) or CHEM-C101 (Elementary Chemistry I) NOTE: To complete program, one science course must include a lab; not needed to apply.

Praxis 1 Alternative Scores • Praxis 1 composite (sum), at least527 • ACT with a score of at least 24 based on Math, Reading, Grammar, and Science • SAT with a score of at least 1100 based on Verbal (“Critical Reading”) and” Math”; NOT “Writing” or sub-tests • GRE with a score of at least 1100 based on Verbal and Quantitative • Anyone with a Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution is exempt.

  8. GPA and PRAXIS 1 Scores Elementary and Special Education IUS GPA of at least a 2.5 Must have passed the Praxis I or Alternatives Math 175 Reading 176 Writing 172

Taking the Praxis 1 • Paper and Pencil Tests - Offered at IUS - Scores available within 6 weeks • Computer-based Tests • Prometric Testing Center, Louisville (423-0478) • University of Louisville (852-6607) • Writing scores available in approximately 2 weeks. • Praxis can be taken once each calendar month, no more than six times during any one calendar year. • Praxis Scores are available on-line for about two months, so be sure to save as a PDF—costs $40+ for another report!

Studying for the Praxis • Praxis Registration Information brochures are available on the wall outside the Student Development Center. • Preparation materials for Praxis are available from ETS (some for sale) and in the Library. • SOE offers a test preparation course: • Contact Neil Brewer at nhbrewer@ius.edu or call (812) 941-2135for information.

  12. What does it mean…Getting into Blocks? You won’t be taking any other general education courses while in blocks. • Block 1 – Child as Learner • Block 2 – The Literate Child • Block 3– Integration across the Curriculum • Block 4– Teaching in an Era of Accountability • Special Education students will take 1 summer block and some evening classes.

  13. Field Experience • ALLblocks include field experiences at specific schools both in Indiana and Kentucky. • It is MANDATORY for students to be available Monday through Friday from 8:00 – 4:00! (Practica schedules will be set early in each semester.)

  14. What else…? • Continue taking courses that are requirements for your degree! Aim to finish Gen.Ed prior to Block 1. • Make an effort to take ENG-W 250 (W 131 is pre-requisite) and MATH “T” courses as soon as possible—they fill quickly! • Keep a close eye on your GPA! • Faculty may review a student’s status at any point in the program! • If you need to e-mail anyone, please include your student ID number! • See your SOE faculty advisor at least once a semester!
