  1. bugs Ewwww...creepy crawlies....!

  2. Creepy crawlies? • No. That’s Science. • Here we’re going to look at how BUGS move – and how humans have used what they’ve seen to make machines move too...

  3. Thinking time... • How do BUGS move? • What different methods do they use? • Why do BUGS move?

  4. Efficiency and effectiveness • When BUGS move it cannot be just to look at the view – they’re burning fuel and risking being eaten! So they move in the best way for their environment. • Did you think about the waterboatmen? How do they move?

  5. Efficiency and effectiveness • Fuel burning is the reason that robots also have to move effectively. The Model T Ford (one of the first motor cars) did about 13 – 21 miles to the gallon. Even a Rolls Royce nowadays does better than that. • So how do ROBOTS move? Do they all move anyway? Hmmmm....

  6. Thinking time - 2 • Name some robots from TV/movies and how they move... • Name some robots in your home – do they move? Why – or why not? • In each case – how do they use as little fuel as possible to do what they need to – and no more???? • How do the TV/film ones cheat – or are they accurate, do you think?

  7. sequences • Now there’s one thing a computer cannot do – not properly, anyway. • So when you give it a load of instructions you HAVE to give them in the right order or everything will go hinky. • Imagine. You’re at home, and mom says, ‘Go to the store and buy some bread, the money’s on the table.’ • Well YOU know what to do, right? • What would the computer do...?

  8. sequences • Well, it would go to the store. • Try to buy some bread – but would be turned away at the checkout because... • Only when it got back would it pick up the money! • And let’s not even THINK about whether it would know the right type and brand of brad to choose....!!!!

  9. Thinking time - 3 • Put these in the right order... START FILL THE KETTLE TEA OR COFFEE? BOIL THE KETTLE STOP PUT TEABAG IN CUP COLLECT A CUP PUT COFFEE IN CUP POUR WATER IN CUP IS KETTLE BOILING?

  10. Extension... • For budding programmers among you... • Can you set out the steps to go from your doorway to school WITHOUT the easy cop out of ‘get in car’..? • Can you cover EVERY turn, and EVERY change of road/path/direction??? • Can you do this clearly enough that a computer could follow it???
