  3. Common Core State Standards (CCSS) “Forty-five states…have adopted the Common Core State Standards.” http://www.corestandards.org About the Common Core State Standards Are a framework of the essential skills and knowledge students need to master in order to succeed in college and careers. • Build upon the strengths and lessons of the current state standards • Evidence/research based • Align with college and work expectations • Include rigorous content and application of higher-order thinking skills • Informed by top-performing countries, so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global community http://www.utdanacenter.org

  4. Common Core State Standards (CCSS) About the Common Core State Standards Are inherently flexible; as new research is conducted as to their effectiveness, they will be revised on a set review cycle. The CCSS are made up of anchor standards and grade-specific standards organized around strands. Anchor Standards: College and Career Readiness standards that define general expectations that must be met to ensure students enter college and workforce training programs ready to succeed. Strand: a broad idea that describes the area of focus/learning Organizing Elements: categorize ideas and standards within the strand Grade-Specific Standard: define end-of-year expectations and cumulative progressions http://www.utdanacenter.org

  5. Common Core State Standards (CCSS) The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) can seem overwhelming. To assist in understanding how the CCSS “Anchor standards” progress across grade levels and what academic progress/learning will look like each year, the Council of Great City Schools has put together some Parent Roadmaps for both the Language Arts and Mathematics standards. These free, bilingual (English and Spanish) PDF resources are available on a dedicated website maintained by the Council of Great City Schools: http://www.commoncoreworks.org Examples: K-8, HS K-8, HS
