  3. Purbeck District Council - Purbeck Keystone Project What do we mean by “sustainability”?? Meeting the needs of the present without using up resources or harming the natural environment for future generations. (Department of Health and Human Services).

What Does Purbeck District COuncil Do About It? • SITA collect waste and recycling in the Isle of Purbeck. • Recycling collected from houses :- • Paper and card (can take them with staples), magazines, newspapers, paper bags • Glass bottles and jars • Shoes • Old clothes (textiles) • Tin cans (steel and aluminium)

  5. 2 Recycling Centres – 1 in Wareham and 1 in Swanage These can take :- Car and household batteries Oil Old furniture Plastic bottles Aluminium foil Garden waste (compostable) Wood Rubble

  6. There are recycling banks around the Isle of Purbeck. • There are banks especially for :- • Plastic bottles • Tetra packs (cartons) • Glass bottles • There are also recycling bins e.g. :- • The Quay in Wareham has recycling bins for drinks cans

  7. What Else Does Purbeck District COuncil Do? • Hold events to promote being “Green” e.g. • Working with PEAT (Purbeck Environment Action Team) to hold a “Car free” day in Wareham on Saturday 20th September

  8. What Else Does Purbeck District COuncil Do? • Selling bags for life • Free Energy Saving Light bulbs Fill in a form • Free “Power down” Switches for • computers and printers

  9. What Can Purbeck District COuncil Do For Schools? • Free composters to schools • Will take away any textiles the schools collect and PAY the school £300 per tonne • If the school’s get in contact collection of recyclable materials (such as plastics) can be organised and large recycling bins placed at schools if possible

  10. What Can Purbeck District COuncil Do For Schools? • Free energy audit of the school • Free waste audit of the school Upton Infants School

  11. What Can Purbeck District COuncil Do For Schools? • Organise school visits to :- • Household Recycling Centre • Hurn recycling centre • Landfill site • ECO composting site

  12. What Can Purbeck District COuncil AND The Purbeck Keystone Project Do For Schools? • Visit Schools and give free talks and workshops Upton Infants School

What Can Purbeck District COuncil AND The Purbeck Keystone Project Do For Schools? • Offer free talks and workshops at the Recycling Education Centre in Wareham • Help schools with the preparation and application for the “Eco-school Awards” (run by Encams - http://www.eco-schools.org.uk/) Organising cycle events to get people of all ages out on their bikes – e.g. Family Bike Ride and Quest at the Sika Trail (Wareham) Sunday 17th August

What Can Purbeck District COuncil AND The Purbeck Keystone Project Do For Schools? • Organise school trips to Studland Study Centre – which is a fully functioning “Eco-Centre” • Organise school trips to the Outdoor Education Centres in the Isle of Purbeck to learn about the natural world and discover why it is so important to look after it
