Dissociation and Neutralization

Dissociation and Neutralization. GLE 9.4.4. What is dissociation?. The process by which an ionic compound separates into its positive ions ( cations ) and negative ions (anions). For example HF  H + + F - Li 2 O  Li + + O 2- NaCl  Na + + Cl -. Dissociation of an Acid.

  1. Dissociation and Neutralization GLE 9.4.4

  2. What is dissociation? • The process by which an ionic compound separates into its positive ions (cations) and negative ions (anions). • For example • HF  H++ F- • Li2O  Li++ O2- • NaCl Na++ Cl-

  3. Dissociation of an Acid • When an acid is added to water it separates into its respective ions • For example • HCl + H2O  H++ Cl- + H20  Cl- + H3O+

  4. Dissociation of a Base • When a base is added to water, it separates into its ions. • For example • NaOH + H2O  Na+ + OH- + H2O • LiOH + + H2O  Na+ + OH- + H2O

  5. What happens when you combine an acid and a base? • When an acid and base combine you are neutralizing the pH and water and salt are formed. • This process is referred to as neutralization. • For example • HCl + NaOH  NaCl+ H2O • HF + LiOH  LiF + H2O • A salt doesn’t have to be NaCl, but any negative ions (anions) from an acid combining with postive ions (cations) from a base. Like LiF in the example above.

  6. Let’s Review! • ______________ is the process by which an ionic compound separates into its positive and negative ions. • Dissociation of _________ produces a negative ion (or an anion) and hydronium (H3O+) • Dissociation of __________ produces a positive ion (or a cation) and hydroxide (OH-) • When you combine an acid and a base you form _______ and a _________.

  7. Let’s Review! • Dissociation is the process by which an ionic compound separates into its positive and negative ions. • Dissociation of an acid produces a negative ion (or an anion) and hydronium (H3O+) • Dissociation of a base produces a positive ion (or a cation) and hydroxide (OH-) • When you combine an acid and a base you form water and a salt.

  8. What’s actually happening during neutralization Watch the video on you tube. NaCl when combine in water dissociate into their respective ions (Na+ and Cl-) since they do not have anything to do with the neutralization they are referred to as spectator ions. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=PCM5IwJ8wcs
