  1. Radioactivity Made by Elmar,Anel,Lourens and Fahed.

  2. Radioactivity is… • …spontaneous emission of radiation, either directly from unstable atomic nuclei or as a consequence of a nuclear reaction.

  3. 3 types of radiation • There are 3 types of radiation: aplha, beta and gamma. On the next slide we’ll talk about this.

  4. Alpha… •  This is a by product of the decomposition of radioactive materials, like uranium or radon. Alpha radiation is when a proton escapes from the atom and flies away at high energy and speed.  These can be very dangerous and is why radioactive radiation is dangerous.  It can cause cancer.

  5. Beta… • This is also a by product of the decomposition of radioactive materials like uranium or radon.  But in this case, it is an electron escaping and it is not as dangerous.

  6. Gamma rays… • This is also called cosmic radiation.  These are very high speed particles of different types that were generated during the big bang when the universe first came to life.  These tiny high speed particles can pass all the way through the earth and solid objects eaisily.  Lead is about the only thing that can stop them.

  7. Chernobyl disaster! • This accident took place when Chernobyl was part of Soviet Union. This was caused by attempt of experiment that gone wrong in 4th reactor that was completely destroyed! This disaster was most destructive in “atomic energy”!Environment was under radiation that caused other death. This radioactive cloud “flew” over the most part of Europe!

  8. Japan event. • Tsunami and earthquake, that happened in Japan last year, were the reasons of causing another accident – the nuclear one! This disaster took place in Fukushima. It’s still increasing radiation level in the country. It reaches 40% of the total from Chernobyl!

  9. What industries radioactivity is used? • As we know, radioactivity is used in nuclear power stations, preserving food. Now we going to list other industries: medicine, academics, agriculture, archaeology (carbon dating), space exploration, law enforcement, geology (including mining), and many other things. Now let’s find out about these industries…

  10. Medical uses • Doctors are using radioactivity to diagnose, monitor, and treat a wide medical conditions in humans. They are using x-rays (if shortly).X-rays helps doctors to see bones through the human’s body. After getting a picture of the bone, they compare with healthy one,to find the problem. The dentist uses x-ray too. They take a photo of a tooth and then look through to find the problems.

  11. Academic and Scientific Applications • In academics, high schools, universities and e.t.c they use radiation for experimental demonstrations.Scientists,as doctors, use radiation to look through the organisms such as plants. What happens inside of it,what substances comes in and out and e.t.c. Archaeologists use radioactive substances to determine the age of the fossils and other objects through the process called carbon dating.

  12. Watch video of nuclear disasters… • Chernobyl • Japan

  13. THANKS FOR WATCHING…
