Welcome to. What will we be doing this year?. Videography. We will learn a basic operating understanding of digital cameras and equipment, as well as video editing using Sony Vegas and Final Cut. Creating film.

Videography • We will learn a basic operating understanding of digital cameras and equipment, as well as video editing using Sony Vegas and Final Cut.
Creating film • We will learn how to visualize, script, produce, edit and distribute short films and documentaries.
Products • We will be producing a regular video newsmagazine for the school, as well as numerous other projects.
Digital Photography • We will learn the basics of digital photography, including portrait photography.
Digital Comics • We will learn the basics of “Comic Life,” a program for creating digital comics and graphic novels.
Audio Production • We will learn the basics of audio recording and editing.
Podcasting • We MAY learn how to create and publish our own Podcast, depending on the class.
Use of Equipment • This class uses thousands of dollars in video equipment. • It must be handled with the greatest care AT ALL TIMES!
Behavior Outside of the Classroom • If we filmed and produced all of our videos in this room, they would be the most boring things ever! • Students will be shooting out on the campus and must be professional at all times!
Working outside of the classroom • While shooting on campus will be awesome, you may want other settings and shots in your films! • You will sign out equipment, BE CAREFUL WITH IT AT ALL TIMES!
Outside the Room Requirements • We will have a number of assignments, such as interviews and sports highlight shows, in which the student will be required to work outside of the classroom.
Grading Participation • I will sit down with each student and give you a grade based upon how hard you are working, kind of like a performance evaluation.
Scripting Requirements • After the first few freeform assignments, students will have to plan, storyboard and script all of their work ahead of time. This is difficult and time consuming, but MUST be done!
Drugs and YOU! • Because a great deal of the funding for our equipment comes from the Colorado Safe and Drug-free Schools program, we WILL be working on safety/drug free projects!
School Deliverables • We will be creating a show of some sort for the school. • This will have to be created on a deadline, NO EXCUSES!
Rotating Media Units • Starting next quarter, or maybe next semester, we will be working in a series of FIVE rotating units. • Students will have to be able to work independently. • NO COMPLAINING!
The Good News! • You will not take another class your high school career that will allow you to be as independent and creative as this class.
…but writing in Media is not as bad as you think. We get to watch short films and critique them. It’s kinda fun.
Soooo… What is Mr. B. like anyway?
Identifying Characteristics of Mr. B. • Generally easy to get along with. • Honest. • Good listener. • Doesn’t play favorites. • Supportive. • Randomly explosive at times. Picture taken by my 5 year old son, Spencer.
What are the rules for this place, as long as you are jabbering away?
Food and Drink • No pop, gum, candy or any other sticky type food is allowed in The Tech Lab at any time. • Students can have water, but only from enclosed containers. • No Pop, Juice, etc.
Something that really irritates me… • If someone eats in the room and then throws the wrappers on the floor, behind their computer, under their chair. • See: Random explosions.
Music • Machines that create music are allowed in the Tech Lab, but only when WORKING on a project. • RAT on Mr. B. and Music goes away. • DO NOT play streaming music from your computer! It bogs down the whole network and they know it is you in my room.
Funny Movies! • Nope, sorry! • Hogs bandwidth. • Wastes time. • See: Random Explosions.
Hats and other headcoverings. • School policy forbids the wearing of a hat on campus this year. • If a student has a hat on in the classroom, it will be confiscated. • Do it twice and the world may end.
Cell Phones • No Cell Phones allowed in The Tech Lab. (Especially Camera Phones.) • If I ask for your phone, give it to me or face possible suspension. • If found, Cell Phones will be taken and given to Mr. Ward.
Games • Access to computer games in The Tech Lab is strictly prohibited. (Most online games are blocked anyway.)
Email • I do not want people checking their email during class. • If you need to check email, do it during lunch or after school.
My Computer • DO NOT touch my teacher’s computer without permission! • This is a violation of the code of conduct and you can be expelled!
Respecting The Tech Lab • Keep your feet off the desks and chairs. • Please don’t mess with my windchimes, my spider, my iPod or other stuff without permission.
IT’S FREEZING IN HERE! • Yeah, I know, get used to it. • Try wearing a sweater…
Starting the Class • At the start of most class periods, I will have a slide up with my instructions for getting started for the day. This will usually have a time limit! • If the class takes longer to get prepared than the time limit, I will keep everyone after class to compensate.
Late Work • Work turned in late or missed because of an unexcused absence will receive a score of 0. • If you need help or more time on an assignment, SEE ME before it is due!
Turning in Assignments • All Work will be submitted via the Video Drive Dropbox Folder. • Improperly copied or misnamed files will not receive any credit.
Grading in Media Productions… • Most projects and assignments will have clear expectations attached to them. • Most of the time, we will grade your work together. (You will grade, I will listen.)
Are there tests? • There is a filming, editing, theory and critiquing final in Media Productions at the end of the Fall Semester. • For the Spring Semester, you will be completing your masterpiece for a Final Project.
Escaping the Tech Lab • Sounds awful? You can transfer out of the class… • I won’t be offended. • However, you can get out once in awhile…
Passes • There will be no Passes given to any students while I am lecturing or doing demonstrations. • If the class has started working on a project, students can ask to use a hall pass. • If you haven’t asked before, I will probably let you go. • If you have, I may not.
Passes- continued • Students who refrain from using their Hall Passes for an entire semester will receive consideration at the end of the semester when considering borderline grades. • Students leaving the class on a pass for more than 5 minutes will not be allowed to leave the room for the rest of the semester.
Annoying thing number one • Talk when Mr. B. is talking, especially if he is giving a lecture. • This will quickly lead to Random Explosions.
