  2. Fill the Bill Recap • So what does Fill the Bill have to do with Adaptations? • Lets revisit the birds we discussed….

  3. Why is adapting to the environment important? • Adaptation increases FITNESS • FITNESS: The current state of an organism that is adapted to survive and reproduce in its environment • Increased fitness means you are more likely to survive!

  4. Changing Environment • In order to survive, species must continue to EVOLVE to the changing environment • EVOLUTION is a change over time. • Evolution can occur within a species • Evolution can also create a new species • Species can change slightly after each generation

  5. Beaks that are helpful for eating different types of food

  6. What happens if your food source changes? • Sometimes a plant may change slightly…. • This will change which organism can obtain food from it easily • Organisms Co-evolve • Organisms will adapt to the environment together • The change of one species will trigger the change of another

  7. Examples of Coevolution • Garter snake and Rough-skinned newt • Predator/Prey relationship • Newt poisons increase and snake’s resistance to poison increases • Hummingbirds and ornithophilous flowers • Breeding season of hummingbirds and the blooming of flowers is commonly seen around the same time
