  3. Sources of Water Pollution • trash • sediment (loose rock or dirt) • pesticides and herbicides • fertilizers (contain nitrogen and phosphorus) • untreated sewage • chemicals, metals • oil and gasoline • heat

  4. Federal Government Clean Water Laws • 1. Water Pollution Act 1972 - Funds to build sewage treatment plants • 2. Clean Water Act 1987 - set goals for reducing point source and non point sources of pollution • 3. Safe Drinking Water Act 1996 - strengthened health standards for drinking water
