  2. What will hell look like? What descriptions or allusions from stories, movies, songs give us an image? Before we leave..

  3. How do you feel about that? Why? Because, according to Dante, in order to achieve moral redemption, one must take a hard look at the evil world and himself first. One must confront inner evil to reach self-knowledge. We are taking a journey into hell

  4. There are 9 circles of hell • Dante travels to hell with a guide, Virgil (who is a real-life roman poet). • Must travel through the Inferno, Purgatory, and then Paradise • It begins when Virgil finds Dante on Good Friday in the year 1300…he serves as a tour guide as Dante tries to find God • Our journey is a comedy • A tale that ends with a happy ending So where does our journey begin?

  5. But where? The River of Acheron Charon must take us across the river thru the gates of HELL Let’s begin

  7. LIMBO • For people who have not chosen sides • Heaven does not claim them and hell does not want them. • unbaptized babies Who is in limbo? • Virgil • Homer • Ovid • Socrates Levels of hell: 1st

Lustful • Punished by Minos • Blown about forever by stormy winds, just as, in life, they were blown about by the winds of passion. • Features the lovers Francesca and Paolo • Francesca was supposed to marry Giovanni, but didn’t want to. Giovanni’s brother Paolo served as a proxy during the event, and Francesca actually fell in love with him! Levels of hell: 2nd

  9. The Gluttonous Deprived of individuality. Each is alone, cold and miserable Are maimed by Cerberus Levels of hell: 3rd

  10. They lie in putrid slush It is constantly raining and hailing Life of the gluttonous

  11. The greedy/”The Hoarders”/”The Wasters” Must roll their wealth back and forth The greedy vs. the wasters: they are divided into two groups, each pushing boulders against each other, symbolic of their mundane existence on earth Levels of hell: 4th

  12. The wrathful, the sullen Must fight for eternity against each other in filthy slime If you try to cross this swamp (Styx River) by boat, they try to pull you in Levels of Hell: 5th

  13. The Heretics These people denied immorality, and therefore, denied God They lie in burning tombs because they believed the soul dies with the body Levels of hell: 6th

  14. The Violent • 3 rings • Violent against neighbors (murders)—immersed in a river of boiling blood • Violent against self—souls become perched on thorny trees • Violent against God, art and nature—lie in burning sand, forced to run in circles, while it rains fire Levels of hell: 7th

  15. The Fraudulent Consists of: • Seducers: driven by horned demons (pimps) • Flatterers: Forced to wallow on a floor of excrement • Simonists (those who attempt to buy the power of the holy spirit): Buried head down and the soles of their feet are burned • Fortune tellers: Bodies distorted so that the head is twisted and they can only look down to see their back • Grafters (those who gain money unfairly): Dipped in boiling tar • Hypocrites: Must always walk at a steady pace • Thieves: Snakes coil and bind these sinners • Deceivers: wrapped in fire • Scandels: hacked to pieces, put back together, and hacked up again • Liars: made insane, plagued with disease and illness Levels of hell: 8th

  16. Treachery To family, country, and friends Frozen in a sheet of ice with only their faces showing to expose their pain Tears freeze so that their eyes can be stabbed Lucifer is here at the center Levels of hell: 9th

  17. You have to get past Satin in order to get out of Hell It’s not fiery and hot here, it is freezing cold because we are the farthest away from God (Video on slide 34) After the final descent…
